Ok slightly random post.
Mum took Tink to the farrier this morning as one of her shoes had slipped and the pad had moved.
But nothing else unusual.

The farrier took the shoe and pad off and was met with maggots, yes maggots, crawling all round her frog. YUK 'insert green puking smiley'
He said he has only seen this in horses if their feet haven't been picked out, but as she has pads and bar shoes on this is not our problem in this case.
So now we have to syringe disinfectant under the bar shoe and pad, have a feeling this could get messy.

Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this before?
xx

not with maggots but my mare used to get very bad thrush under the pads when she had them on her front feet and I used to syringe a solution made of from peroxide (recommended by farrier) under them.

We had a bit of a spate of it a couple of years ago. My friend brought her horse in from the field one day and found a load in its heal and I know that she religiously picks her horse's feet out every day. And we found some maggots in a pony's foot one day and it had been trimmed by the farrier the day before! Apparently they only take a few hours to hatch, so a fly could of laid eggs in there and in only a few hours it could be crawling with maggots. Horrible things!

Bluuuuuuuuuuuuurgh! maggots!!! and they stink so bad!!! I bet that was rank! Never come accross this before maybe an opertune fly laid some eggs in some poo and she trod in the poo and squished some of the fly egg poo under the pad??? hence the maggots!

bluuuuurgh it's making me feel sick just thinking about it.

good luck with the syringing disinfectant, maybe you can just dunk her feet in buckets of disinfectant 'foot in mouth' style, and that would do the trick

Yep, seen it a fair bit in France. It's very difficult to prevent as flies laying eggs to maggots takes about 4-5 hours in the summer. Can she have Equipak instead of pads?

Eeeuuwww, the freeloading squatters!!

Hope you manage to evict them ok

Farrier was just relaying a maggot story last week - said it's the only thing in feet that makes him want to throw up!

On the plus side, free 'fresh' maggots if you happen to be into fishing!!!

ATM she seems to be happy in her feet so i am reluctant to change atm, we will see if this is a one off.
Nando, not into fishing but that did make me laugh!!

my beasties just been fitted with pads with glue inserted in and on top of her bar shoes our farrier has not told us to do anything with the pads should we?

Yuck! I'm poorly today and that nearly had me reaching for the sick bowl again! I hope she stays maggot free from now on. A disenfectant footbath sounds like an easier manouvre to me than syringing under the pads - perhaps ask the farrier if that would be ok xx

Quite a few years ago i got my mare in one morning and found a load of maggots in her frog. Doused them with hydrogen peroxide solution and that worked. Never reallly concerned me but was bit disgusting. Mentioned to the farrier the next time he was out and he wasn't bothered either. As he said, there only eating away the dead tissue.

YUCK! Sorry I dont have any advice on this one but reading it deffo put me off the packet of giant maggot like wotsits I was eating (they are now in the bin!)
