Group hacking VS Solo Hacking - goods horse + naughty horse!

Has anyone come across a horse which becomes an unresponsive, loss of steering and braking mess when hacking solo?

But stick him in a group of hacking horses and becomes perfect to do in every way?

Yes, although normally riding school types that are used to going in a group.
One wasn't even happy with my mare for company when hacking out, had to be with his boys!

Yes, but just perservered, with gentle short hacks out and about so that they grew in confidence. I don't think it's naughtiness, just fear of the great unknown without all their buddies for moral support (or indeed to say 'Yes, you're quite right, that IS a dragon hiding in that recycling bin!"

Yes, but with some perseverance (and lots of circles) we managed a series of hacks on our own, eventually working our way up from just walking to trotting & cantering.

my gelding was backed very late at 7 years old (10 now) and just doesn't hack alone without going straight back to the stables and refusing to budge.

Add a few more horses and he tries to take the lead?! and has brakes and steering.
