How long does it usually take for a hogged mane to grow out and does it ever recover fully. I am buying a cob whose mane is hogged and I hate hogged manes with a passion so want to grow it out. Hate the stage where it looks like a toilet brush though!

Hi - it takes about 6 months to a year to grow out. As soon as it is long enough (a couple of inches) start to put wee plaits in it - it looks daft as they stand straight up but eventually they start to help it fall. it will probably be really thick when it grows out but persevere with it. I have a lovely dun cob who I want to show but I hate the thought of hogging him as his black mane is lovely!!

Good choice on a cob - I had brilliant fun with my last one and so far with this one though he is only 5 so we have a long way to go.

You mean this stage:-

This was in July last year and he was last hogged before this at the end of April.

You can't really see all that well but his mane lays the wrong side and is about 2" long. It was 4" before I pulled it. It lays nice and flat and looks just like any other horse!!!

Lance's is currently growing out, he is usually hogged in winter just so its one less thing to clean, we hogged him end of Oct/start of Nov time last year, and his mane is now at this stage (pics taken last weekend):

On a positive note, back in the dark ages when I had my first pony, he was hogged because of sweet itch. When we left it to grow out, it became far more lustrous, straight and shiney than before. I sometimes consider doing to my hair....

If I had a cob I would keep hogged I think they look FANTASTIC!! Not sure how long it would take, I would think about 6 months based on how my mare's mane grows.

I unhappily hogged my pony's mane in April 2007 to try and get it to grow in evenly, as he has sweet-itch and is constantly rubbing bits away. However it has barely grown back over the winter, think he just grows slowly though

I last hogged in November and I can already do some decent plaits in Beaus mane. Its definately going to all grow in like before tho - but I am trying to look after it so ti doesnt get all ratty again as it was a mess before we clipped it it jsut cannot survive being pulled

and the solo comb experiment was a disaster!
