Im really hoping my welsh sed D mare will grow a bit more. when she was 2 she was 13.3,shes now 5yrs 8mths and about 14-14.1. How big do you think she will grow as some people say she will cary on growing a bit. Is there any bone measurements i can do to see how big she will get?

To be honest (am I’m not an expert of Welshes) I don’t think she will grow much more. Maybe an inch at the very most, she may fill out and mature though which will make her appear bigger.

Hmm i agree, im not sure she will grow any more. Native types are generally not types that keep growing until they are 7, unlike warmbloods etc.

Why do you want them to grow???

Hello- I loan a seccy D and his owner has 2 others, they are 18 months, 3 and 7. We too are hoping one, the 3 year old will grow another few inches (but unlikely I'm afraid) but the 7 year old definately wasn't finished growing at 5, I'll check with his owner but I think he went up an inch or so, and he has thickened out unbelievably in the last couple of years.

The experts say welsh D's don't finish growing until 7-8. We look at their parents heights, if they were a first foal for the dam, apparently they dont grow as big. Their hocks is another indication - the 18 month old on paper should make same height as the 7 year old, and his hocks are pretty much the same height now.

Hope that helps! x

I would of thought all the growing height wise was done. I have a rising 3yo who stands at 15.2hh and I would be thrilled if he made 15.3 and thats just an inch! Doub't there would be much growth after 5.

I personally also wouldnt think he'll grow much more. My Welsh D is still filling out (he turns 7 this year), but more OUT the way and chunking up than up the way! Luckily, mines 15.2hh already so I dont want him any bigger.

Know the feeling - out definately happened last year at 6. I wondered for ages why my legs were aching after riding until one day we noticed how much broader he was - doh!
