Has anyone got any opinions, advice and experience on growth rates, height as youngsters and mature height?

Just looking for fun really,
Would also love to see everyone show off their photos of their babies. :D

My rescue filly was 12h at 12 months.
Her dam was 14h and sire 14.3/15h (literally just a tiny smudge under 15h)
She is now 12.3 - 2 next month. :D

My friend down south - a vet specialising in pigs - told me she has seen this many times, and that she will grow very slowly and take longer to mature.

But again, just wanted to see what others have experienced with their youngsters?
And of course photos ;)
Any chance to show off lol

String test her. :) http://www.ultimatehorsesite.com/info/stringtesting.html

My grey's parents are 15hh/15.1hh approx and she was 15hh when I last measured her. She's rising five, so I don't expect much more height, if any.

The chestnut gelding's parents were both 15.1hh and he's slightly taller than the grey and he's just turned three. His sire is apparently known for throwing big foals.

Here they are last summer.

Thanks. :)

RE photos, I upload to photobucket and then post the IMG code in the reply box. When you post the reply, the photo should show up.

Try the string test; it is really very accurate. And if you can get enough food into them before 2 year old then you have a good chance of "catching up" on any deficiencies.

I bought all mine mostly as 2 year olds.

Rowan's sire is 15.2hh and mum was a welsh D and approx 15hh.
Picture from his breeder of him as a yearling:

Rowan at 2.5 years was 14.1hh
Rowan at nearly 6 years 15hh

Not sure on the height of lola's dam/ sire as she is a exmoor

Inka's Dam 16.2hh Inka's sire 14.1hh. Inka's full brother is 4 years and 15.1/2 hh
Inka as a 3.5 year old was 15.1hh

I expect her to make about 15.3 as she is gonna be a late maturer.

my boy was 14'2 at 20 months old, when I got him.

Dad = 14'2, massively solid connie, mum a 15'3 NH TB, so was told he'd make around 15'2 fully grown. Full brother is rising 5 and 15'3. my boy will be 3 in May and is already 16'1. in a year, has gone from a small 6foot rug, to a 6'6 :s I've not measured him for months but standing next to my 15'2 mare, he looks maahhhoooosive!!!

I'm not one for over measuring so bare with me while I try and find the closest photos to when she was measured.

This is her at about 14 months.
12.1h

(^ this photo taken by a 10 year old, sorry its blurry)

She never seems to look the height she is to me,
I do think though its because I see her everyday
But then I have seen people measure her and the numbers so I have to believe she is growing (thankfully)

She is now 12.3h

It will be interesting to see what height the string test predicts. Use the elbow to fetlock method. :)

She has a very pretty head, what breed is she?

Will definitely give it a go tomorrow
I have googled both string tests, so we shall see

She is a NewForest x NewForestxCob
Her head seems much more cob like to me now, and its supper fluffy!
But she is still the prettiest little thing :)

Lovely ponies!

Does anyone know of any growth rate graphs on the net? Height plotted against time? I swear mine grow in fits and starts!

The monster who looked like she was heading for 17HH (Highland pony:eek:) has stopped at 14HH and the tiddlers have now caught up.

Wolf has grown pretty steadily and has ended up on track for the 14.3/15 hands his genes predicted.

Felix on the other hand.... His parents are around 15-15.2, all his full siblings are around 15-15.2, we were expecting 15-15.2, but who knows where he'll stop. He was a weedy little runt when he arrived:

On his first day with us, saying hello to our 15.2 TB:

And he still looks just as immature, it's just then you stand next to him:

He's rising 3 (looks like rising 2, physically), and is about 15-15.1 already. He's in a 5'9" rug and his legs are about 4ins longer than his 15.1 16yo full brother's legs. And we were taking the pee out of a couple of our mates for having tall babies....

I have a NF who is 2 in May. He was roughly 12.2hh last year and has just been measured at 13.2hh. His mum was around 13.1hh and his dad was 14hh so no idea how big he's going to make!

This photo may show my filly a little better.

The girl in it is a friend of mine, think she's about 5'7, giving her a cuddle as usual :D

Here she is 23 months, 12.2/3 (pretty much 12.3)
What do you guys think?
Didn't end up doing the string test today, completely forgot how haha

Just wondering why you clipped her?

She was extremely fluffy, really thick coat and when I took her for walks with a little trotting she got hot and sometimes sweaty.

With my job having me coming and going such crazy hours(on call) I had to leave her a few times a little damp from sweat when we went out in the afternoon sun, but then with clear night skies the temp dropped after 4ish and it was so cold :(
She has rugs, so I felt better clipping her and her not getting hot and sweating slightly the being left in the cold nights.

She was as good as gold and helps with her experiencing things as a youngster and she I start lunging her in a few months she wont get too hot.

She still isn't malting, unlike all the others at my yard
:p especially the greys lol
hair everywhere!
