.. today whilst leading my baby round the quiet villiage where he lives, a very rude man in a car came zooming round the corner! i politely asked him to stop as it was a very narrow bit, he did so i smiled and thanked him, soon as i got next to him he revved his engine and drove off scuffing his bum with his front wing, he shot forwards and was quite shocked but didnt go too silly ... i got his reg plate.. but now i dunno what to do..? is there any point reporting him and if so who to? i dont want him to turn it round and blame me and it somehow get portrayed as me not being able to handle my horse... ahh i dunno!! im soo cross with him, the majority of people in the villiage are so courteous so horseys :( .. should i pursue this... or just put it down to experience!?!,... pony is fine by the way.. thoughts? experiences?? .. bit ranty i know... but it made me soo cross! hes so good in traffic and i dont want him to lose his confidence! :) x

ps - title only refers to rude car drivers :)

There's a website for recording traffic incidents with horses... I forget what it's called though! Somebody on here will have the link. Also give his reg no. to the police.

at the very least he is breaking the highway code and at min guilty of careless driving. Def report him. Even 'under control' horses need drivers to behave as the code states ie pass only when safe and wide and slow. He certainly wasnt wide enough in this case. Even if the police dont speak to him they will log it and thats important in case there is a serious accident with someone else and he then tries to claim it was the rider/horse fault and that he has a spotless record with passing horses.....

and def post it on horseaccidents website too.

edited to add: there are so many serious/horrendous accidents where people dont manage to get numberplates in all the trauma/panic that it's important that when theres any incident where a numberplate is taken, that this is reported.

Makes you grrrr doesn't it!! I live in rural Devon and in our village they seem far too used to horses!! The majority drive past wide but don't slow down, or if a narrow lane they try to squeeze past.

I have now taken to riding in the middle until its safe for them to pass so they don't squeeze on by! I trot on where I can and am polite when they do pass.

I am also on a youngster who got very frightened by a forageharvester last year.

I would definately report them!

Years ago I was riding a mare who wasn't too keen on lorries, we encountered a milk tanker on country lane and I asked him if he would mind just stopping while I rode past him, he waited until I was parallel with him and revved his engine .... the mare i was riding belonged to a copper and he did all the reporting for me!

XX

ps on the other hand I meet loads of sweet people who pass so slow and wide that my horse is nearly walking faster than them hehe, are some very considerate people around, for always an idiot somewhere!

Thanks everyone :) iv reported him!!!! they've said they'll go up and talk to him.. so thats something i guess. hes only 2 minutes up the road from me so if he hasnt learnt and does it again they said just come back! im slightly calmer today lol it is very annoying when you follow all the rules and be polite, move as soon as you can, wear high-viz and people still act like you shouldn't be on the road! anyway iv done all i can, il ring the police up later and see if anything has actually been done or said :) Thanks again!!!!x

Was the road so narrow that the car physically couldn't get past the horse without hitting him, or was it just poor driving??

a bit of both really! i wouldnt have dared try and pass a horse on that section, and it was poor of him to try! i dont think he knocked him on purpose but he didnt make the efforts not to either!!

I'm fed up with speedy drivers. We are lucky as we have a 'normal' width road, however, it goes to 50mph just outside our gate heading from the main town to villages and it seems moron drivers get that sudden "i can go fast" feeling and speed off. Apparently the police have mentioned to the council that people drive fast but they're never over the limit.

On Tuesday I was leading my horse back to our field after using our friends school over the road. I literally have to go about 300 yds so decided to lead instead of dismount to negotiate the gate and then remount for that short space. I was wearing hi-viz and walking near the middle of the road when some idiot came hurtling towards me. Must've been driving with his eyes shut. Only realised I was there when i manically waved my free arm about and shouted slow down.

Sometimes I wish horses were fitted with horse horns.

A machine gun would be a better option,Oz

Perhaps if you come across that sort of situation again if its too narrow in your opinion for someone to pass safely, don't give them the choice by walking in the middle until you can stand in a gateway or something?? this is what I do now xx

it happened about 10 metres away from my yard enterance, for me to turn round id have to walk a fair way to get in a gate way, the easiest thing would have been for him to wait no more than a minute for me to get past or i suppose he could have reversed back to the gateway to my yard. i stood in the middle and asked him to wait, when he pulled in slightly and stopped i assumed he would stay ther till i got past safely! but nope... who knows what runs through their heads :( your right though.... you cant just assume people have common sense!! ,... he didnt even stop to apologise or see if he was alright or anything.. grrr
