After several posts on here about silent cyclists spooking horses I educated my cyclist OH on how to approach a horse.
I told him to shout a cheery "Hello" as he approached so the rider knew he was coming and to ask if it's ok to pass.
OH came up behind a rider last week, souted "Hello" and "Good Morning" at increasing volume 3 times.
Rider continued to plod down centre of road without acknowleding his presence.
OH understandably got fed up crawling behind horse and passed as far away as he could (bearing in mind horse was in middle of road).
Cue torrent of abuse from rider telling him he passed too close!
The rider had headphones in so couldn't hear him shouting!
Given many cars are pretty quiet and I struggle to hear them without headphones in what would she have done if he was a car getting impatient and wanting to pass!

Grrr - this isn't aimed at all riders but cyclists get a bad press for spooking horses, then when they try to do as they're asked they still get abuse from inconsiderate riders.

Why do people ride with earphones in? I only use mine to pass the time and keep me amused when doing something boring, like a bus journey or a walk not taken for pleasure. If I felt it neccesary to have them in while riding I would have to consider giving up horses. And as above, it isn't safe if it cuts you off from what is going on around you.

Well done your OH for trying to do the right thing, even if it wasn't appreciated; I seem to be lucky with cyclists as most of them are very considerate.
Did the silly bint take her earphones off so he could explain his point of view?

I can't imagine riding out in earphones - not on the road. I'm constantly trying to stay one step ahead of my youngster whenever I ride - losing one of my senses (hearing) would be the last thing I needed!

I have ridden with one ear phone in once, but even then you can't hear whats coming or where it's coming from properly, took it out after a couple of miles now satisfie myself with either talking to the horse (if we are on our own, whihc is not very often) or singing very loadly and badly!!

OH didn't fancy sticking around to hear more abuse - plus it was cold!

When I schooled a lot or hack off road (across fields) I have one headphone in and do when walking the dog or running just because I get lonely otherwise nothing wrong with a bit of classical in the background.

But NEVER on the road.

That makes me so mad
I cycle to my horse along a bridleway, I saw some riders approaching so I stopped and got off in plenty of time (it was uphill so I was not going fast).
Rider at the front was not paying attention and her horse did a little startle and started to hesitate.
Boy did I get a mouthful.

Boy did she get a mouthful back :D

"Sit up, stop perching, leg on, let go of his mouth and RIDE FORWARD I did nothing to upset your horse, you are just being a PASSENGER" :D

I just thought, no wonder horse people get a bad name :D:D

As other have said riding in headphones is just stupid!! I use my hearing all the time for cars coming round blind bends so I can move over on the grass verge to make sure that if they come bombing round it's not my horse their hitting. I'm also lucky as my horse loves people on bikes, OH rides out on his and always has a saddle bad of goodies for King, so he looks forward to people on bikes :)

What a stupid bint, if you dont enjoy the sounds around you when riding why bother, i could never lose one of my senses like that when riding, my ears are like little antennas, listening out for cars te whole time

What an idiot to ride like that!! Well done you oh for trying to be helpful though - some people do give other riders such a bad name
