Today a lovely lady from the yard was hacking along the lane when two horses came up behind her.
As they were trotting and she was just out for a mooch she decided to pull her horse into the side and let them pass then carry on.
Her horse was wearing a Hi viz exercise sheet, which was blowing a bit in the wind, so she held it down so it didnt flap as they went past.
As they approached one of the men started having a go at her , telling her it will spook his horse, and why the hell is she wearing it anyway on a windy day, she must take it off because it will spook her horse too etc etc.
To which she replied that it wouldn't spook her horse at all as he is bombproof and very well behaved, and if she was to take it off where would she put it, never mind the fact she is going onto a main road at the end of the lane (as they would of been ), and would rather been seen by traffic.
Anyway the 2 men passed, all the while having a go at her and 'well make sure you hold it still while we come past' etc etc.

I actually passed these 2 men yesterday myself, and they made a comment because the horses were spooking at my pink equisafety coat.
Well Im sorry but if your horse wont walk past someone wearing a pink coat then you shouldnt be out hacking...
Im so annoyed, lady from the yard was quite upset at how rude he was :(

When anyones tried to make rude or stupid comments to me ( not just with horses, life in general) I tend to thank them in an obviously gushing & sarcastic manner "oh wow, thankyou so much for your words of wisdom, I am truly enlightened by your superior knowledge, I hope one day to be as faultless as yourself" etc. Leaves them very angry & you laughing.

Wow! Some people i just don't understand! They seem to think they own the place! I think the best thing to do is ignor people like that, they cannot control people so seem to think that being rude will make them seem bigger. At least your friend and you will be safe on the roads!

She shouldn't have bothered explaining, she should have just told them she was fine and if they had a problem that was their tough luck.

It sounds as though these people are a) seriously overhorsed, and/or b) too blinkin' lazy to spook proof their horses against every-day objects they might meet out on a hack. They are as much to be pitied as reviled, as it must be pretty horrible to spend every hack with your buttocks clinched together in fear of anything unfamiliar which might be round the corner.:p

Thats silly. Some people are so over precious "don't do that because it will spook my Horse" if they never show there Horses these things then how can they help bombproof them. The guy at my yard keeps telling me his Horse is terrified of tourches. I told him that I go to the field every evening with a torch and his Horse in fine, infact he even comes up to me and I have brought him in before with a torch in hand.

Thanks guys,
I think what upset her the most was that she was actually holding it down incase a gust of wind came and did flap it around and spook them.
I agree it must be awful for them to ride around like that scared of anything they come across, but dont be rude to other people who are allowing you past, and out for a nice hack - complete with hi viz to be seen on the roads :(
When they came past me yesterday and said 'oh hes spooking at the colour of your coat'
I just laughed and made a joke of how bright I was, could of mentioned the fact that their dog was loose up the lane ahead of them which 'could of spooked my horse' !!!! :D

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

This sort of things get me cross! If nothing else your friend was complying with the small print on her insurance. The day their horses sit on a car - they'll regret not having any hi-viz on

If it happens again, perhaps be ready with the card of a good instructor to very politely offer them, as they clearly could do with some help managing their mounts. ;):p

My thoughts exactly guys - if theyre horses are that spooky why on earth are they hacking them out on such a windy day?! Theres going to be lots of things flapping about!!
Ahhhh i dont know, just annoyed me - she would say boo to a goose (
