Grr - YO gives my pony colic then kicks me off yard.

god she's gone a step to far i know she's bad but she usually gives a valid reason to say you have to leave :O its not as if she could have been offended by the note that you left her it only said that he couldnt have straw ever again as compaction colic was no longer covered by your insurance

Good facilities aren't worth risking your horse's life. I'd take a lean to-shack and a living healthy horse than someone trying to practically poison & murder my horse.

I was thrown off a yard with one month's notice just before Christmas a few years ago. I too was a model livery but I think it was because I might have muttered a bit about how my mare was constantly moved around different fields in a vast estate and it was a lottery trying to find your horse in the dark, especially when you were hoping to ride after a day at work! Oh and I think I asked the YO a couple of times when she would start giving hay in the fields - in November! Think she also fed straw for a bit, come to think of it. It was a pity because this yard had by far the best facilities in the area too. Was a damned nuisance with timing because I had just paid for a month's livery at the yard and ended up moving my horse on Christmas Eve and having to leave her, under supervision of people I hardly knew, for my planned Christmas break to visit relatives.

Your'e not in Scotland are you?

Have you actually asked the yard owner who gave your Pony the haylage. I would ensure that you ask her and have a witness present.

If she did, I would ask her why. The woman is clearly an idiot. There is no way I would leave my horses somewhere where my instructions and those of my vet were ignored leading to my horse being in harms way.

You are a better man than me gunga din I would have ripped her head off!

Best out of it! all the best facilities in the world do not count when you have a complete idiot in charge of your horses who is so far up their own backside they will not listen to instructions not only from you the owner but your vet it really beggers belief!

I would be moving ASAP (and I know it is not easy to find somewhere especially at this time of year) and being bloody vocal as to why!

Rant over!

.

Find somewher else move horses out, send her the bill for vet's call out and secondly name the yard. I know many people on here are unhappy with the way they are treated at their livery yards. 1) write down the details so you have evidence and name the yard as other people are filling your stables that you have had to leave and they are in for a nasty shock. If people spoke out the YO would have to sit up and take notice, specailly if they started losing liviers

if you care about your horses leave, i was on a yard like this, in the space of less than a year the bratty yo, gave my mare,.. a re done tendon injury (by turning strange horse out with already injuryed mare)

my new horse colic.. by forgetting to feed him then giving him a bowl of hard food.

time and time again i asked her not to risk my horses and if she was turnign a new horse out to boot mine up, i didnt care what it cost me, it was cheaper than losing my show horse.. did she? did she hell, well i lost the plot and got kicked off.

in hindsight.. i was a fool for staying my horses health is so important to me,,.. she didnt care a hoot so long as she was wandering around bragging and collecting the cash.

Just to add to the above.... If you can, try and photocopy or take a clear photo of the instructions you wrote in the diary, as i imagine this would be vital evidence if you took it further.

Also, not all YO are as stupid

i hate when i read posts like this as it gives all YOs a bad reputaion, its no wonder people hate livery yards with YO's like this lady!

Glad your horse is ok!

You all sound as furious as I was! Thanks

Headless_Horsewoman- very much suspect it's the same yard. I'm in edinburgh. Naming and shaming will start once I've found somewhere else.

Previously I was more upset than angry. Toby's had a huge upheavel, moving from somewhere with 3 other horses and a tree to tie to, to a huge yard with 25 other horses in his group. He's an anxious, stressy boy and has only just settled. He's now happier than he's ever been, with his gang of new buddies.

I moved, despite the huge increase in price, to get him going nicely, having broken him with next to no facilities. I had lots of plans for the spring and summer.

And now I've been kicked off for no good reason.

Now I'm mainly angry. Firstly for her feeding him against my wishes but mostly for being so bloody unreasonable.

RE what i wrote - can't remember exactly but pretty sure it went:

"Poor Piper has gone into the Horsepital. He has coliced further from being fed and is still badly impacted.

I'm shattered from the constant vet visits and desperatly need to go to bed! I'll sort stuff out in the morning"

Second note said:

"Pipers back from Horsepital, all better. He is not allowed straw ever again (esp as he's now no longer insured for impaction colic!). Have put him back out with **** and co, hope that's ok.

Will the ponies be going onto hayledge? He would much prefer that group as he's made friends, but not if they're getting straw. He won't cope with the big group as he's easily bullied."

Neither are what I wanted to write! They would have started 'How dare you, you stupid old bitch........'

Have to say, I don't think she's malicous or stupid and she does run the yard fairly well otherwise. However she has literally no social skills, can't or won't get on with people and ALWAYS knows best and totally unwilling to listen to anyone else. Yes, she doesn't need to be friendly with her liveries, but at least acknowledgeing a 'Morning!' wouldn't kill her.

I have considered trying to sue her for costs. I'm lothe to mention it to the insurance company in case they decide he didn't really need to go into the Horsepital - he would have recovered fine at home but the YO couldn't be trusted. Personally I think it's more trouble and stress than it's worth. He's insured for the colic and he will still no doubt be exluded from further colic, regardless of if I prove negligence.

And it'll be hard to prove. Don't know for sure who fed him (but I'll be my bottom dollar - no-one else on the yard is so stupid or arrogant!) and it'll just drag my friend further into it. HOWEVER, if she's also kicked off (which is a possiblity) I may will be persuing it in revenge.

JenTaz - be careful what you say - you may be coming with me if she reads this! I've spoken to various other liveries since who confirm that it's not unexpected - she apparently booted of a livery who's been with her for 12yrs not that long ago over something just as trivial. It seems the reason the yard I'm on (of the three) is so desirable as it's as far away from her as is possible! And everyone seems to be [****]-scared of her and won't ask for ANYTHING (however reasonable) because of her habit of evicting people.

Grrr, now I'm mad again!

So - anyone know nice liveries in Edinburgh that offer 24/7 turnout, aren't too expensive (two horses quickly adds up) and has a school? That's all I really need. Oh, and a reasonable livery owner.

ours has 24/7 turnout but only a grass school so wouldnt suit you, sandy might take you? yards i know are more than what you want to pay and/or are full up?

i'll message one of my old liveries on facebook as she moved up there, last i heard she was on a farm type livery yard, but it had a school, the grazing etc and wasnt too far out.

I must say, when i was a teenager, i was stabled at a riding school and in the 4 1/2 years i was there, i was only the second person to leave on good turns! he was the type that if you moaned about something, you had to be off the yard the same day! Somehow - not sure how, i managed to complain about stuff and never get thrown off
smile.gif
when i gave my 2 weeks notice though, they tried to make it as uncomfortable as possible.

Oh no, sorry to hear of all your trouble. Thank goodness your baby has come through it ok. Can't believe your YO, that is ridiculous. Especially considering you are almost a vet yourself, you would think she would ackknowledge that you know what you are talking about.
Is that one of the yards off the by pass.
What about Mr Brownlees yard by broxburn, it's really cheap and you can have 24/7 if you want. Or don't you want to come out this way again?

what the hell is the woman doing feeding horses straw?

[/ QUOTE ]

For the record, most horses suffer no ill effect from being fed straw - and it's excellent for horses that need to loose weight, but for whom a withdrawal of hay long term would be detrimental.....

Have fed it myself with absolutely no ill effects what so ever.

.

Whenever you change from hay to straw you need to do it gradually so that the enzymes that are in the digestive tract can change and adapt to the new feed. i.e mix some of the new straw with the hay and gradually increase the proportion of new straw to hay over a period of a week. It is also advisable to do this when changing from one batch of hay to another batch.

i think id be getting her paying the bills! end of! outragous

[/ QUOTE ]

Ditto this. She could have killed him. Ok so fai enough the feeding of straw wentbad, but to further give him someething when a VET said not to - thats just malicious! Thats like me saying please dont give my child peanuts she is allergic then someone then giving her a Nutrageous bar!
