hunting that is?
do some horses never settle to it?
do some get so stressed its not enjoyable?
are some packs not fast enough for them and get upset by lots of standing around?

My local pack (rockwood harriers) were out today and meeting at my local pub and seen as id had a personal invite I thought id take Chant along.

so it was her 2nd time out, the 1st was when she went out with the Badsworth & Bramham Moor on Boxing day nearly 2years ago, she was well behaved, stood well and didnt cause a fuss.

today wasnt so good. She wouldnt stand still, ran backwards, spinning, snatching at the reins and generally being a pain in the arse which made it less than an enjoyable morning.

Starbucks mum was out, and she said that shed seen a lot worse, that it was a fairly quiet day (we only jumped 2 jumps - 1 hunt jump and a stone wall and had a couple of canters) and that with more visits and time out with the hunts she might settle.

So i said goodnight before she upset someone too much and got asked to leave, but I had been hoping to take her to the opening meet this Saturday but having serious doubts about it now

might have to drag my hair Yak of a hunter out of the field and see if I can clip her before lunch on Saturday so I can go.

She needs a bit of time thats all.

I know you probably want to hunt but do consider taking her to the gathering before the hunt and then leave without going hunting to get her used to the atmosphere as its a very charged, el;ectric feeling on a hunt day and very different to most horsey get togethers

Most horses get very excited if they only do the odd day, they are better if hunted regularly at least every week or fortnight then most will settle.

I think you need to take her a bit more and see how she settles - I'm sure most horses will given time.
Unfortunately mine won't - I hunted him for a season then decided that if I wanted to live long enough to collect my pension I should call it a day.
Believe me, your mare's behaviour is mild in comparison with Boo on the hunting field
