Grrr my first rant!

Im not a happy bunny this morning, i rent 2 stables and a 4 acre field from my dads friend, i have one horse and a mare and foal. just got told today that owners new girlfriend is putting her horse in with mine, not really happy as new horse breaks fences and dont want it upsetting my mare and foal who doesnt like other horses,
also new horse is coming tomorrow and hasnt been wormed!!! not happy as itl be living out 24/7 with mine! next thing will be she wants a stable i only have 2 and after the foal is weaned i will need 3 and there is only room to build another one. Rant over
 
thats a pain. I would use the foal as an excuse and mention you will need to keep them seperate and use electric fence to keep yours apart from the other one. It takes time for other horses to get used to each other and you dont want your foal getting injured in the mean time.
Always hard when it is not your land. I had a problem with my farmer wanting to put horned cows in with my horses and in the end worried about it and said, look sorry its just not going to work and explained the situation. He understood and in the end they went to another field. I spose in your circumstance maybe the land could be seperated..? Keep your horses one side and the other in the other field. It would then not get lonely and you will have someone to ride out with..?
 
do you have any written contract with him? An awkward situation, but if you are renting the land, then you should really have it to yourself, unless you have a contract, or agreed anything else with him.

Or can you negoitate a rent reduction - after all you will have less grazing in theory now another horse is being put in with yours?
 
I'm not sure what type of arrangement you have but presumably you rent the stable and field as a complete package - its does seem wrong in those circumstances that anyone should put another horse in. Its a bit like renting a house and being forced to take in a lodger by the landlord.

Unfortunatley the two things against you are:

Dads friend...difficult situation
Dads friends new girlfriend....difficult situation

Not surprised you are annoyed particularly as you are probably limited in what you are able to do .
 
Do you rent per horse, or do you rent the filed. If you rent the field you can say no.

If you rented a house he couldn't move his relatives into the spare room.
 
I rent as a whole field and stables, dad is away working today but whe i rang him he didnt seen happy, we have an agreement that we have the field and stables for 3years as we are currenly looking for somewhere to buy. im going to leave mare and foal at one end and make sure i double fence them in, but will let her put her horse in with mine as he gets on well with other horses, and will be nice to have someone to ride with, will just have to see how things go...
 
Do you have a written agreement???

If you rent the whole lot you should not have to just be told that you have a new horse being put in with yours, its not on.

Obviously the siutation is difficult, but if it was me, I would try and get my dad to talk to his friend, and get some money of the rent.

Well there could be some positives and it will be nice to have company and help if you are late etc. If it works well it could be a good thing.

You do need to re-negotiate your contract though.
 
dad will be talking to him tonight as iv told him im not happy! i wouldnt really mind y gelding having abit of company as hes been out on his own for a few months but owner only told me today that i had 2 put electric fencing all round the field as new horse coming who breaks the post and rail fence, so at least if fence does get broken i cant get the blame for it! Will have to tell her to keep away from mare and foal, worm her horse, not use my stables and keep an eye on water as dot have any troughs in field yet. what a clart on!
 
so you have to supply electric fencing??? Becuase of someone elses horse? That should be up to them, its their horse, not yours!
 
i know im rather miffed! i have all my electric fencing in the field anyway to separate my horses and rotate the paddocks so i now only have 2 large paddocks to rotate, my mare and foal paddock and a small grass arena with my jumps in. hope we find somewhere to buy soon so i can leave and take all of my electric fencing with me

I completely understand where you are coming from and realise that a contract is a contract and it should not be altered but I think you also have to remember it is your dad's friend and he is prob doing it as a favour so you have to be careful how you word things cause you dont want to be told to just leave...
I am in the same situation where I rent a field and stable and although really nice it has been used for years by a local farmer for his cows. I have a contract with the guy who owns the field but the farmer still feels he has a right to put his cows in the field with my horses when he pleases...I was really angry when he threatened putting his cows into my field one day but again had to word it carefully as he started to get nasty when I immediately said no to the idea. Thankfully the guy had a word with the farmer and he stopped the pressure.

It maybe really awkard for you due to the woman being your dad's friends gf. Makes it more sensitive and it maybe better to just roll with it and look extra hard to find somewhere else now if it works out being horrible....
you never know though, she might be really nice and helpful. I would give it a chance and see how it works but make sure she knows how you like things being done from the start...good luck with it...

i definately agree, 4 acres is just right for the amount of horses you have and any more than that would have you short of grazing, which wouldnt be nice for mummy and baby!
i hope it gets sorted out for you
