... Are a waste of bloody time

NO skin scrape taken, no allergy testing done - different vet tells me he thinks she needs £100 a month atopica injections for the rest of her life... based on what? Cos he never did a blood test??!!!!!
Wasted an entire evening and sod all has been done yet again. He wants a few more enviromental changes to be tried, before allowing me to part with £100 a month...
Her insurance has excluded this, so thats just wonderful.
Happy ****ing days
Please excuse me while I collapse in a pile of my own tears....

Just feel like they're trying to leach every single pound coin out of me that there is...
**** knows where I'll find £100 a month for injections, Scotts jobless come January!
Ahh I love when life kicks you right in the fufu :(

Oh I do sympathise, can you not find a recommended vet near you, good vets are worth their weight in gold and I have changed mine twice. Im convinced one of them diagnosed my last dog wrongly without any tests and he subsequently died. I had no redress as they said he had leptospirosis and had to be cremated in the public health interest.

Without proper testing I dont see how they can diagnose your dog and I would be either voting with my feet or insisting they do what I want.

I go in ready to demand what I want and they talk me round with their special magic wizzard tricks :(
I'm going to try my mum and dads vet, a second opinion is definately the next step... but I'm worried they will make me staet all over again changing food, and household products etc...

Thanks LLL it was a rough time especially as I had an abcess under my tooth and a face twice the normal size, felt so ill hasnt slept in days, so was so low I went with the vet. Live and learn unfortunately and he was my dog of a lifetime, because of the public health issue I wasnt allowed to bring him home to bury either.

Go to your mums vet explain what has happened(write it all down so you dont overlook anything) and ask them what they suggest. You can then say you want to think about it and that will buy you a bit of time to really think about it before committing to expensive treatment.

Thats really rough about Scott losing his job come January and every penny is going to count from now on.

Its not the best, but we'll manage.
Thats such a sad story DG :(
Not really any words that can make it better, but I'm sorry for your loss X

so sorry to hear you're having a hard time OP, pour yourself a huge drink and try to figure a plan of action. Once you've made up your mind what to do, like getting a second opnion you'll feel much better.

sorry i dont know what you suspect is wrong with your dog - is it allergy related?
If you explain to new vet the regime you've already had in place, and things you've tried and discounted they wont make you start from scratch again.

Goodluck and hugs from me

Lula

also sorry to hear about your dog DB. Hope your agility is still going well :)

Yes, definately get a new vet! Blood test would ascertain exactly what she is allergic to - then you make the environmental changes. He's working without that analysis. I have experience of this and Atopica is my vet's last port of call given the huge cost. Looks like they're just trying to sting you. Plus Atopica does have side effects. Best of luck.

Thanks Lula, yes its allergies. I feel so bad for her, shes on 6 piriton a day at the mo and its not touching the sides poor love.
Shes very sleepy too.
Missieh, I was under the impression blood tests would only show up inhailable allergies, pollen etc?

Blood tests can show food and environment alleregies, but sometimes it will come back negative, even though there is a problem. Couple of hundred quid down the drain.

What about skin/patch tests? They are much more reliable.

We went for a skin scrape & blood test this eve, that was pre arranged & booked in... We arrived and he said no point doing it now as he needs all morning, then proceeded to tell me why it wasnt the best course of action to take. Im just a bit confused, he told me tonight that blood testing only picks up inhailable allergies. Im sure thats what he said...

York tests can do food/household/ environmental. Supoose it depends on what test they do.

My vets tend to avoid the bloods as they say they are not always conclusive and cost ££££.

I think York test is the one that I need but the vet hasn't offered me that as an option yet, and I'm trying to be guided by them.
I'll do what CC said and seek a second opinion. She's going to Cayla for some socialising so that can be another tick in the 'enviromental' changes box, to see if being away from our house changes much...

Get a tub of NAF D-tox and start feeding a teaspoonful a day and I bet that will help.

Although it is designed for horses it is perfectly safe for all other animals, including humans!

To alleviate irritation use Neem oil, mix 5 ml with 3 ml of mild shampoo and make up to 1 L with hot water and rub that all over the dog. Neem will not cure the problem but it will stop the irritation affecting so much.

You do need a vet that will actually listen to you thats for sure, so dont discount a change and no reason to start over, all your records will/can be referred over to the next vet.
We will have to sort some dates for the new year:p
Is there anywhere thats particurlary worse on her, what are you feeding at the moment, obs it's not all down to food, im just nosey:p

Im feeding her Fish4dogs, no treats no bonios no nothing else!
Previously she was on raw, and before that james wellbeloved, and before that something else that I cant remember the name of :o
Will definately seek a second opinion before comitting to anything.

.

Sorry, off topic but I am allergic to lots of things, have just been tested for the works...can I take D Tox then? Sounds worth a try I'm so ill at the moiment with bloody allergies.

Sorry Cayla just saw your bit about what areas are worse...
Under her chin, its all scabby and she scratches till she bleeds.
Her feet, she eats them till they are raw, and her bum.. she licks it obsessively. (had her glands done last week)
Oh and her ears, they are clean according to the vet, but shes constantly scratching away.
Her
Muzzle and eyes are bright red too...
So no, I guess its all bad lol :o

have you tried piriton?
tell the vets you cant afford that every month and let them come up with a better alternative, I use this on my horse vets all the time because they suggest some frankly ridiculous treatments sometimes!!! (the most recent being a full workup including back Xrays because I asked for some advice to why he occasionally hiccups when Im tacking him up!!!!!!!)
Hope she gets better soon :)

Have you tried sulphur? Our Border Terrier was just the same but that helped him no end and you only have to give it while there is a problem, not continually so they don't get the chance to become immune to it. You can add rock sulphur to the drinking bowl too. It won't do any harm even if on other medication - and it's cheap!

I really sympathise - please get a second opinion (dermatologist?) and demand that the skin tests are done, they're worth their weight in gold to find out what your girls actually allergic to.
Sounds like a very odd vet!! Really feel for you our girl ended up on Atopica its the only thing that helped her :( At one point she was more or less fully dressed, socks, vet wrap, tshirt just to try and help her skin heal.
