Grrr, some people are unbelievable!!! Two incidents of irresponsibilty in one day!!

TBH it fills me with dred riding on the roads now. My daughter likes to go through the local village, the same one that as a child I rode through.

Sadly it is now used as a rat run, and is just not safe, even the sight of a small child on a small pony, with mother leading is not enough to slow these idiots, even when I politely and calmly ask for them to slow down ( they run get a different kind of hand gesture) so now sadly we have to just go through our fields, which is not as lovely ad it sounds, with gas guns and various forms of wild life jumping out from game cover :(

I have just sat and read this thread from start to finish and have to say how troubled and very sad I am to read some of the threads on here.

I am not part of the H&H regular clique by any means, and nor am I a young and sprightly competition rider like so many of you appear to be.

However, I have been playing with horses for many, many years and have grown old as the roads get busier and busier. I have witnessed many acts of careless and dangerous driving around horses over the years.

I have also never, ever witnessed such a pitiful attack on someone who has been involved in one of these road rage incidents (make no mistake the driver described by OP was in a full blown attack of road rage!)

I cannot begin to understand why people on a world renowned horse forum, who, for the most part, share the OP's use and love of horses would find it necessary or acceptable to attack her in this way?
Dozymare!!!! the clue is in the name:D

I gave up my career to move somewhere I could ride with less fear. Although I do still have to do a little roadwork on most of my hacks, I can do shortish ones without any, since we live up a long track.

This is the busy road coming up to the house....

I should add that I am penniless as a result of this decision and winters are hard but spring is very heaven

Agree

Apologies Moomin1 - I did not understand your original post maybe this is because I have not been in this situation. Next time get the reg.

But I still stand by the fact that horse riders should be responsible on the roads.

I think I may just get the council to re-jig the roads though to remove the bends.................QUOTE]

As requested, re-jigged road for you ;):)

Swap you a bend any time, this damn road (aka country lane, is dirt - hard top stops at the intersection) is like this for 10 kms, straight roads, no hedges either, may be safe to ride on but they are Boring!!!!!!!!!:)

I'd love to have a nice staight road to ride on! If you wanna swap, we have a few Bends you can have!

This, I have just sat and read this in total amazement at some of the responses. It certainly appears that OP has upset one forum member in particular who has gone on to nit pick at every comment made by OP and try to tear it apart - shame on you!

OP, it sounds like you had an awful experience and I would echo photographing number plates and making a police report if you have to deal with bad drivers in the future. Glad you and your friend were both ok.

Thankyou Dolce. Yes I have upset this particular person and it seems the reason, reading between the lines, is that I started the thread about how many people on HHO disagree with hunting.

Is this me you are referring too? Moomin you have not upset me nor have I any interest in the hunting.

How pathetic that this has been turned into another attack the OP. Dont you see you are ruining this forum! Reply constructively and if you cant they don't reply at all!

OP can imagine that it's a hard situation but I'll just echo others that have said get the reg and report it. Glad to hear you are both ok and so are your horses :)

No it hasn't been turned into an attack on the OP, there has been a mixture of responses as per usual. No one's ruining the forum and the only way the forum could be ruined would be if anyone took any notice of people trying to tell them what they can and can't say!

OP, I feel so sad for you as I've had too many scary experiences on the road to go into, but the sad truth is that there isn't much we can do about them IMO.

I agree, there has been no attack, just differences of opinion as per usual. This forum would be rather boring if we all agreed all the time.

As someone said earlier, roads are really no longer safe for horses, and yet many, many people continue to hack on them. I stopped riding on roads 20 years ago because it was obvious that cars and their drivers were not going to make it possible for me to do so. I'd love to wander around quiet country lanes on my horse, as I used to when I was a child, but this day is done.

That's a real shame, I must be lucky because we ride a fair bit on the road, country roads so we see tractors etc plus quite a few cars. I have always found the drivers to be really sensible and slow down when asked. (I always smile and wave thanks to them). My mare is really sensible on the road and nothing phases her but i still ask people to slow to pass as you just never know. That was a horrible situation that the op was in, pleased everyone was ok. Not sure why anyone would give her a hard time over it.

I don't know many yards left anymore wherefore you don't have to do at least a bit of roadwork. I wouldn't have the time or money to box my horse to somewhere to hack all the time. Also there are less and less open spaces left with development and urbanisation going on so it makes it very difficult to get away from roadwork.

I only read the first couple of pages and was pretty appalled by the attack the OP received. I think the OP once described me as "obnoxious" or something similar (I don't dwell on it as I don't know him/her and they don't know me, so I couldn't give a toss) but I certainly don't attack her every time she posts!

OP - it's scary when it happens. I don't know of any horse which won't spook at some point. I have one mare who isn't 100% bombproof (and wouldn't it be boring if they were all bombproof?) and a youngster who is starting to be lead and long-reined on the roads - the idea being to get her used to traffic. Yesterday I must have waved my arm up and down several times at passing cars - the only one which actually slowed and even stopped was the fallen stock lorry.
It's driving standards which have dropped - lack of respect for other road users.

As for the kid without the hat - not a lot you can do really - their kid, their choice, their giving 24hr per day care when the kid comes off and gets brain-damaged.

I'm not the only one who thinks the OP was attacked on this thread clearly. That is how I read and viewed the responses. There are ways to express your opinions respectfully even if you don't agree... I'm sure the OP will even agree that some of the responses were uncalled for.

But as said this is an open forum and views will be expressed... Even if it's for the entertainment of others

Yes I do agree that some of the responses were uncalled for and to be honest just a bit bizarre! I'm pretty shocked that certain people on here think that a road rage incident like that is acceptable and that it was in some way mine or Cobrastyle's fault or irresponsibility! Dosymare doesn't appear to have read my OP properly but still kept quoting me incorrectly.

But it does make for interesting reading anyway I suppose!!!

Wasn't going to bother making any comment on this however the OP would appear to have a persocution complex IMO. If you post on the Forum by default you invite comments from other posters. There is no guarantee that the comments made whilst valid will be to the liking of the OP or other posters - that's life. What I would say is that everyone is responsible for their own personal safety and whilst others may be at fault sometimes it is essential to make a decision for your own
safety based on what will be the
best practice in any particular
situation. I personally do not hack
on the roads closest to me as I
have judged them to dangerous
due to the presence of bends and
the normal speed of traffic. This
is a decision I have made to
ensure me and my horses safety.
There are also two sides to every story and whilst I detest the thought of anyone been hurt in such a situation it is important to remember that personal responsibility remains at the core of all such situations.

If your horse is spooky, (at gateways) is it wise for you to be hacking on country lanes/round blind bends?

If the horse lives in an area of country roads and blind bends, as mine do, can you tell me how you de-spook the horse except by taking it out with an experienced rider on board?

Please note that it is VERY unsafe to ride two abreast on these roads and tandem companion can be a liability more than a help.

Have you ever heard the term "nominative determinism" Dosymare?

Nominative determinism - very clever.

I just think riders should be responsible for their mounts. My gelding spooks at wheelie bins - I don't hack on bin day for this reason. But however if there was a bin out after said day and he spooked and caused he to be a hazard in the road and as a car came round a bend and did not see me/slow down - i am therefor in danger of my horse ending up in a pickle/incident. I never excused the bad behaviour of this driver nor said horses shouldn't be on the road. But there are two sides to each story.
I have also apologised to OP but this has not been accepted and she/he continues to insult my view.

You accept your horse dictating to you which days of the week you can go for a hack, rather than desensitise him? It explains why you think she shouldn't have been out on the road, but I think it is your approach that's wrong, not hers, sorry.

I do write as someone who has a horse who will not hack at all, but there doesn't seem much I can do to desensitize him to daffodils which will insist on popping up their heads where they weren't last time we passed :o

And I have apologised for this.

In what way do I have a persecution complex?!! Please explain. You have already insinuated that I am a nutcase which was offensive enough so please refrain from being so personal from now on. You have jumped onto this thread from the hunting one merely because you disagree with me starting the hunting thread.

In the first instance you were agreeing with the the sentiments that "OP was Attacked" and saying responses were uncalled for! This is peole expressing their opinion -
you may not like it but hey that's what an open forum is about. I presume you refer to my comment concerning "nutcases" on H&H which was clearly in the context of all H&H forum members and was even reclarified for your benefit - not JUST you! No one is being personal except in your mind. I did not jump anywhere FYI . I believe there are no restrictions on responding to any thread on H&H. By saying "you have jumped onto this thread merely because you disagree with me" once again shows your persecution complex. Please get over this or otherwise you will continue to presume that posters are being "so personal"
