This morning, a wonderful bright sunny winter morning OH and I were trundling up a reasonably busy country road to see a friend and help her daughter get to grips with jumping on her new pony.

We came round a corner to see a small grey pony yearling on the verge. Something made OH slow down and I spotted that it wasn't tethered, it was loose. OH pulled over and jammed the hazard lights on.

Pony wandered over to us. Traffic whizzed past. Pony had clearly escaped his field as his friend was pacing up and down the fence line calling for him. Naughty little pony was ignoring him! OH had a good look about for a way to put pony back in field, but he appeared to have climber out over a barbed wire fence! and gate was sensibly padlocked at both ends.

Traffic whizzed past. I held pony by nose and withers, OH rang police to alert them to potential danger to traffic (exacerbated by a number of local road closures). Eventually a car pulled over and asked if we needed help (!!!! they didn't know if it was our pony, if we were stealing it or anything!!!) I asked if they knew who it belonged to, they didn't but said they'd go and ask the house nearest if they knew. Never saw the guy again.

A few minutes later, OH was still on the phone to the police, traffic still whizzing past, pony getting immensely annoyed by me stopping him from going anywhere, and another car pulls up. Three people lean out of the window and ask if they can help. I explained that we'd spotted him loose on the side of the road but didn't know who he belonged to, and couldn't get him back in the field, and OH was on the phone to the police. They said they knew who they belonged to, 2 of them got out of the car, and the 3rd one went to get the owners. 10 minutes later they came back with head collars and keys for the gate.

The guy put a headcollar on the pony, and put it back in the field, with a slap for escaping, and another for biting him as he lead it. We made noises of "glad we tracked you down", "glad he's safely back where he should be", "glad he was easy to catch/hold" etc.

the guy never acknowledged our presence, or the fact that we'd stopped his apparently "prize winning pedigree connemara colt" from being hit by a car/truck doing 60mph.

No thank you's. No nothing.

*note to self, in future - Don't Bother*

How down right rude!! But well done to you and your OH for stopping at least you can go with a clear conscience that you stopped an accident happening :)

Thats really bad someone let my yongster out of field again this week and lucky a car stopped and caught her and a friend was nearby never been so grateful to them.

That's ridiculous, i agree with your thread title - some people really don't deserve horses!
but you and your OH seemed to have done a wonderful job of rescuing him, so well done for that :) x

You will, you know you will, after all it's not the pony's fault the owner is an idiot (to put it very politely.)

Well done for stopping I would have done the same.

We need each other, and remember it wasn't the owner you stopped for :-)

I know full well I would stop again, but I was just sooooo cross that the guy was so flaming ignorant! And you're both right... it wasn't the owner we stopped for.

there were a couple of other things I thought at the time were a bit odd, but didn't include in the first post.... the guy said that both horses were uncut... (not sure if I believe him, but that's different) does anyone keep two uncut horses in the same field, even if one of them was only a yearling?!

And he was busy feeding the two ponies lumps of bread as we left - bread? really? recipe for colic IMO, but what do I know, I'm only a passing stranger!
