sorry guys but a small rant,
was at patchetts yesterday and was in the warmup arena, which is bedlam anyway, warming up for the BN.
i appreciate that some horses are naughty in the warm up and with novices the mirrors are very scary and likely to kill them! ( thats what mine thought anyway!)
enter locally known dealer on a nice looking warmblood, who starts trotting around and starts shouting at everyone to stay away as it kicks. it had no ribbon in its tail and seemed quiet enough.
i jumped a fence and had to canter past said horse on my approach. i was nowhere near it (ive ridden stallions/ youngsters hundreds of times in that arena and know when there is enough room)when it started to lash out at my horse. as i was miles away no damage was caused but the horse was like something possessed. me and rider had words about bringing something like that into a collecting arena to which she said its a baby. i pointed out that mine was too but mine managed to behave!?!?!
anyway i jumped and as i came out of the ring there was a huge roaring and screaming match in the far corner of the arena and said horse had pinned a little grey in the corner and was trying to set about it. the riders were shouting at eachother and the grey got clouted a few times by the other horse and rider also got a kick to the knee.
my point is should that have been allowed to happen??? she knew it was naughty before bringing it but put no visable warning on the horse that it kicked.
why are some people so inconsiderate?

Its one thing something kicking out when somebody else gets to close but another if it pins something else up into a corner to set about it! Did it jump or did it get thrown out?

Obviously she thinks she is far to important to worry about others !!! it needs discipline at home before coming out - i must say patchetts warm up is better than a lot of places ive been to though xx
 
Sadly nothing surprises me at BSJA warmups anymore. Only rule seems to be 'Do as you like and sod everyone else'.
I spend as little time as possible in the warmup.
So how did you do?
 
I think they should have received a warning from the show organisers. People know if a horse kicks it wears a ribbon, also you'd to your upmost to keep the offending horse away from any others. I hope the pony wasn't too bad though
 
it was a nightmare there.
i dont want to slag off weekend riders as i class myself as one to an extent, but any pro looking at the carnage of that collecting ring would of said exactly that!
people colliding, forgetting left to left, walking two abreast chatting etc
 
i jumped the 90cm and he was spooky as soon as he set foot in arena. had a canter around before the bell went to show him as much as i could then cantered to first on a good stride until he leapt sideways, so he stopped!
gave him a tap and then he jumped clear.
BN rode more forward and just had an upright off the corner but it was a much better round.
he had never been there before so it was all new and scary!
 
Do they leave the gate open at the entrance on affiliated events ????

They did when i took my baby there and i ended up back in the warm up !!!

WEll done sounds like you jumped well despite the warm up x
 
Are there not Stewards as BJSA shows? Surely in a situation like the one at the beginning of this post there is someone official who can be requested to intervene?

As to general carnage at indoor winter shows, well, I expect it unfortunately. With the young horses I try to make a considered decision about which ones I think will be able to handle it and which ones will either endanger others or freak themselves out.

oh yes that was it !!! i went over a jump and straight back out the ring !!
 
I'm with time faulter. Unfortunately, this kind of behaviour is happening all too often, not only in BSJA but showing, dressage and hunter trials too.

It's appalling and I think stewards should be able to have some control over it, for example, only allowing certain numbers in the warm up area at one time (especially where areas are cramped), being able to take people out or not allow them to compete if their behaviour causes others distress. Unfortunately though, I highly doubt this will ever happen.

Really cant see it happening. I've yet to see a steward even control the max height of warmup fences as stated in the rule book. Major problem when you're a billy no mates at comps and just have to jump whatever is up.
I fear it will take a major accident before anything changes

That happened to a friend of mine when we jumped there earlier in the year. She jumped a fence down the long side then her horse ducked into the warm up arena sending her head first into the wall, was awful!

Oh my god i was luckier than that and got away with a broken nail - I had a feeling my youngster would try it so had my groom standing at the entrance with a big stick it was only a clear round which was lucky !!
 
Sounds horrendous. It was like that when I went a month or so ago, and now I will go anywhere else instead, even though nearest to me. The warm up is diabolical at best but like you say, a dangerous horse like that makes it quite terrifying. The thing is as long as its a well known local trainer, Patchetts are unlikely to do anything. They probably save her a parking space too as she brings a lot each time and spends more money-makes you sick really!
 
Can I put forward the other side of the problem (although I do agree that the person concerned was inconsiderate to say the least) I had a mare that could be evil of crowded but I always competed her with a red ribbon and verbally warned everyone that came into the practise ring, when it was my turn to jump I would have a friend 'clear the path' to the ring for me and yet I still got either abuse or completely ignored! One day I was waiting a good 30yds from the entrance to an outdoor ring as I was next to go in and the competitor came out of the ring and plonked har horse right b/hind mine. I was shouting at her to move but she was completely oblivious to me. When my horse booted her you can guess who got blamed - fotunatly their was a BSJA rep there who took my side. Basically it's hard when a horse is a kicker but consideration works both ways!

i do see your point as i used to compete a stallion that had a phobia of horses coming towards him. he used to stop dead and spin round. he never injured anyone directly but he did stop dead once in front of another horse which also stopped and his rider went down the shoulder!!
i was accused of being dangerous ecspecially as he was a stallion!
this was even though he had his silver bridle disks on and his tail ribbons!

I was contemplating going to Patchetts for my first ever very scary BSJA outing, having read all the above it puts me off as my pony can be a bit sharp & nappy, don't fancy whizzing out of the ring. Will think again& plan my outing with care, as I do want to enjoy myself!!
 
That sounds nice, though have to confess she is not young, however is sharp & spooky as I said. We've taken a LONG TIME to get our act together & I so want to be able to have a nice day, with a bit of a "Wow can't believe we did that" sort of a thing.

Referring moer to Time_faulter's post earlier, my friend went to Patchetts on saturday with hher 4 y o for their first SJ outing, was warming up for the the 90cm class (mare can really jump!) and she said some guy came in, got his entourage to put the warm up fence up to the very top hole (which he clearly shouldn't be doing before a 90cm!), jumped it a few times, then left it there so all the others had to just jump one of the warm up fences until someone with a helper on foot came to put it back down!!
Aren't people rude!
I don't mind patchetts warm up though, I have to say. Been ok when I've been there but I do unaffiliated.
 
I've had both sides of this to. Titus was a great youngster, would walk round like he was at home, but one day someone galloped (yes, out of control!!!) into us!!! This really upset him. He then became very nervous and scared of other horses around him, so people would canter pass, practically touching u (have ribbons and gave verbal warnings!) and he tries to run away, which looks like bad behaviour but just scared!!! Thankfully hes so much better now with much practice at home and taking a friend to look after him!

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago at Vale View, whose warm up is plenty big enough not to need to go near anyone! I was cantering round minding my own business, some stupid person on her horse, came round the corner to fast , horse was that close to me it couldn't cause any real damage, but caught my knee and knocked my very nice 4 year old over! I crawled out from underneath him and shouted at her, to be told it was only 4 and hadn't done anything like that before! Hmm looked like it had to me, she didn't even apologise and still kept riding it close to other peoples horses. Mine is now terrified of warm ups and if anyone comes to close his head comes up and his ears are back, it causes untold damage and there is just no need for it!
