Horsebox went in for MOT - failed - was told it needed welding and new rear tyres.
Was expecting the welding but the tyres are in excellent condition, but apparently the wrong load rating :(

So i arranged for welding and then took box to a tyre specialists to have a loko at it.

They told me that the tyres were fine and I DID NOT need new ones. Yippee saved my self £160.

So box went for welding yesterday and just been phoned by the guy to say he has shown the box to the guy next door who does class7 MOTs and he says it definately needs new rear tyres - arghhh!!!

I am just really pissed off at the tyre place who told me i didnt need new ones when i actually did.

I am going to have to cancel my lesson with Chico this week as i just cant afford it now i need to buy the tyre - *cry*

Sorry for the rant but i am so annoyed :mad::(
 
I feel your pain - I first took my horsebox in for it's MOT on 23 April. It FINALLY passed on 8 May thanks to all the to-ing anf fro-ing about "it needs a new XYZ which we will have to order" "now we have retested it it needs new springs" etc etc. I think they were just taking the p*ss actually. It cost me nearly £2k for a 5 year old box! If I was a man I am not sure they'd have convinced me that all these things "needed" doing, but I didn't dare risk my horses - I got them to back down to "well it won't fail the MOT if you don't replace XYZ but it really should be done" and then I didn't dare not do it!
 
My little H reg transit horsebox went in for its MOT last month. I was bricking it but it passed yipeeeee and he said so long as I keep the maintenance up there should be no problems but then I did spend a couple of thousand on it before I used it.
 
I know the feeling. Mine went to a well respected "specialist" for a service before being plated in Jun, to be told it needs a long list of things doing, then sorry we cant get the parts you need to come and get it as it will never pass and is really only suitable for spares! Hubby made a few phone calls, visited a few local places and we got it sorted and plating passed on 1 Aug at a cost of £1500! It did mean alot of the summer without transport but thats the way it goes with an old box. Next year i will just bung it in for plating and see what happens. I thought i was doing the right thing by getting it serviced first, how wrong can you be??

My box is 20 yrs old and i thought it was just me that was having problems but i have a friend whose box is on a 53 plate and he has had nothing but problems with it.
 
Im so lucky my Hubby knows about these things. We recently bought an old Ford Cargo (for not a lot of money) it wasnt plated but Hubby couldnt believe his eyes, it was as solid as a rock. We got Thorpe horseboxes to collect, pre-plate check it, do what needed doing and plate. It sailed through. It needed 2 rear calipers, 2 new tyres and new spare and a few bulbs, cost about £1000. It had its first run to Keysoe at weekend and was a dream. Hubby will maintain through the year, otherwise I think I would have stuck to a trailer:)

Can I borrow your hubby for a day next April??? I also fell for the "get it serviced before its MOT" endless list of things :-(

sounds familiar :( ours was alot older...and we spent more but same thing, *could do with * this, this and this. oh, now we'v done that, could do with this. while you asked for the steps putting back on we sanded and repainted them for you. no it wasnt free, here's the bill for the paint and labour.
 
i am lucky in that the guy doing the welding etc is doing just what needs doing and not picking up lots of extras. Actually he welded extra holes than he had quoted me the price for and said he wouldnt charge me extra.
He has also had a word with the guy next door who does the MOTs and as he is so busy but they know i am keen to have the lorry back he has agreed to stay over late one night just to do my lorry :D

I cant fault the guys who have got it now, it was the stupid 'tyre specialists' who said they tyres were fine when they obviously weren't!!!

I am veyr surprised at the prices you have had to pay though - i have had the whole underneath welded up and made safe and he has only charged me £350. The tyre, that he will order, is just £70 and includes fitting etc.
