My horse came in from the field 4 weeks ago crippled lame behind. He could only put weight on the toe, hoping it was a abscess and not a fracture. It turned out that no abscess was found and after extensive xrays and scans nothing detected other than swelling on tendon sheath, this was drained and horse has been on box rest, trotted up every week to see if imoproved. He showed improvement everytime and then last weekend was sound, lame and then sound again, trotting up morning and evening over two days. He has been sound ever since so i got on him tonight and trotted a couple of laps of the school, trotted him up after and was slightly lame again. Under saddle he didnt feel quite right but i was thinking it was down to not working for so long and not being quite together and pushing from behind. Now im very concerned as to what would cause an intermittent lameness with nothing showing on scans and xrays. The tendon sheath has no heat or swelling now and we are sure the problem is up high, any ideas greatly appreciated.

Not the same thing quite, but 2 years ago my horse had bi-latteral lameness on front legs/feet.  We didn't have any tests done, Vet suggested field rest for at least a month.  We turned her out for 2 months as was still unsound after 1 month, she was fine after 2 and has been sound ever since.  Sometimes i think rest is the best option.  Think of times when you twisted your foot or ankle and how long it took to heal, even when it looked ok.
