In 2011 I bought a Barnsby non slip saddle pad (their "grip pad") and liked it so much that I bought 2 more. Thought they were quite pricey at £60 but they really did work. Have just been on their website, thinking of getting a couple more, to find that in less than 12 months the price has increased to £80. I have emailed them to ask what their justification for a 30%+ increase is - will be interesting to see if they respond!

I don t get your gripe.
Why do they have to justify their prices to you? either you buy it or you dont.
If that was my business i wouldn t evan bother replying.

Costs of raw goods have gone up substantially. I ran a tack shop a few years ago, and over the 3 1/2 years everything went up quite a bit. They tried to keep costs down where possible but haulage has increased so much that they really couldn't. Please also remember there is now an extra 2.5% vat on everything you buy.

While thats true, the increase OP writes about is substantial and other makers don't seem to have followed suit. I've been looking to replace a sheepskin pad and a Keiffer numnah bought several years ago and neither has increased in price by more than a fracton.

I think its fair to question price increases because at the very least it alerts companies to customers concerns and possible loss of business.

There may be a good reason for it - as a returning customer who has already bought 3 of these, I am interested to know why the big increase. If it's something like they're now manufactured in the UK Instead of a third world country, for example, I would happily pay the extra.

??????

Something that you have bought from them less than 12 months ago & you are a returning customer & it has gone up by 30%.......& you don't get the gripe? With your attitude if you had a business I think you'd go out of business in no time.

You also need to ask the question when was their last price increase, and how many extra costs have they absorbed in the meantime. I remember with Nuumed, their prices didn't go up for ages, then went up quite a bit. I think things need to reach a certain level. Plus if they have changed suppliers things do change

i have my own business which i started from scratch with a £60 sewing machine 6 years ago.
I have still got the same business and now have a workshop with a £65000turnover.
I don t think i need your advice .

Tax has gone up, the Post Office prices have gone up, raw materials, labour, petrol (if couriered) etc.

2011 saw a huge price increase across the board.

Nobody cares how much you earn. Get a grip.

There is nothing I hate more than people that sound off about their income.

Op - I think you are right to enquire.

From my experience with Barnsby when buying various saddles and bridles they have enough commercial savvy to grasp the importance of customer services adn how much focus there is on prices.

They said turnover not income!! And well done at getting a good business going, lots of us wouldnt.

Prices of everything have gone up nowadays so to keep a company going their going to have to put their prices up arnt they??

I think you could do with some personal skills as they appear lacking. You may find your turnover & profits will increase when your personal skills do.

Oh, I'm in business as well & doing nicely. ;)

Might there have been an introductory offer?

If you search online shopping they can be found for £64 including shipping so possibly the rise is recent and takes in increased costs?

There's three 6's in that statement..... Sounds like the devils work to me...:)

thats why i didnt mention my income.
You would have to be a mind reader to work out my income from my turnover.
I was merely responding to someone who said i wouldn t be able to run a business. My answer demonstrates how wrong that person was.

I don t think im lacking in personal skills at all. I just don t waste words.

*stands up*

Anyone can have a turnover over £65000, they can still be loosing money on that business.

That in no way proves you are successful.

Back on topic, I'd imagine costs have gone up in some way but they'd be happy to respond to your email explaining why the increase. After all, I'd rather explain my prices and maybe keep a customer than tell them to p!ss off and not be so nosey. That's my 2pence worth.

Give me a like button!:D

Fwiw I started a business from scratch last April and we are forecast to turnover in excess of £65k by year end, I earn £35k a year but that has naff all to do with my business as I also work full time, so just be aware that there is a long way to go yet.
In answer to the original enquiry I would guess that manufacturing costs have increased hugely which means you either source a cheaper manufacturer or you increase prices, I would say that that product being a quality brand will warrant an increase in cost better than a dip in quality.

Yikes, I didn't think my not very interesting post would provoke some of the reactions - lol. I fully appreciate that prices increase - it was just the % increase that rather astounded me. Oh that salaries increased by over 30% p.a. too!
As far as I'm aware Barnsby have produced this numnah for several years, so last summer's £60.95 price was probably not an introductory offer. I actually only looked on Barnsby's website to buy direct, as some special rubber reins I bought in a local saddlery (also last year) were about £10 cheaper on their website, so I was hoping the same might apply to the numnah - sadly not! Yep, I've done a bit of looking at various online prices and have been able to source for around £64 as some still had old stock.

As for my email to Barnsby, I consider myself able to construct an appropriate letter enquiring why the product should have increased in price so much, hopefully without alienating the company to the point that they'd rather lose a returning customer than bother to reply! As mentioned earlier, the particular numnah is, in my opinion, quite pricey at £60, never mind £80. I have loads of numnahs - Nuumed, Mattes, Prolite, etc etc, to compare this one to in terms of quality, durability, design, effectiveness etc. and this was my conclusion.

I'm hoping that Barnsby, as a reputable and professional company will feel it worthwhile to reply to my genuine enquiry.

I bought one of these - and think they are fantastic - when they first came out about 9 years ago. At that time it cost £50, so a £30 increase in 9 years is not at all bad. It just happens that most of the increase occured at once, rather than in small but regular increases.
I look forward to hearing what Barnsby say.
