Grrrr - am feeling so deflated! Waited 4 weeks for Saddler to order me in a saddle, she finally came last night and it was no good!

My horse is 27, he has a very good back for his age but has the normal old age problem that he is now high withered. The only one that fits him in the Thorowgood T4 High Wither, 17 Medium - which he went lovely in but was so uncomfortable for me I could only manage one trip round the school - it must be because it has such a high pommel it felt like it was bruising me!!

Got the impression she couldn't really be bothered

to try and help me find one and she basically told me to find another saddler who has a better selection !!

Is it worth trying another Saddler? Will they say anything different? Or am I destined to ride in a painful saddle??!!

Don't know what to do - I want it to fit him properly so he is comfortable but I really don't want to pay £400 for a saddle that is so uncomfortable for me!

I would try another saddler. Talk to them on the phone first, explain your problem and see if they think they will be able to solve it rather than wasting everyone's time with them coming out if they haven't got anything suitable

I think your saddler was being quite honest with you if she told you to try someone else. If she obviously hasn't got the right saddle for both you and for the horse, then her reputation is best served by NOT supplying you with a saddle that you are not happy with.

So yes, do try another saddler. You might even need to try a few saddlers before you find the saddle that really suits, but you are definitely NOT destined to ride in a painful saddle.

try another saddler, allthough sometimes you may have to use one of thos high wither pads underneath, we have a horse at my yard of simular age etc. He had an owner with a basically unlimited budget and they never found anything that fitted, he now has an albion and a pad

i went through this when i tried to get one for my 18 yr old arab x he has high wihers but i found him one on ebay not ot a clue who made it but it has a metal auckland badge on the back (never heard of them) its a really good fit very lightweight i had saddler come to fit it to my horse hes loads better fot it!

My friend has a 27 year old TB who is still very active and being ridden most days. She recently bought her a new Ideal GP saddle which was tailored to fit her mare perfectly. It was expensive and she had to wait 8 weeks for it but she is really pleased with it.
