I'm searching for a horse for my daughter who is looking to showjump and do a bit of x country, we have been looking on the usual sites such as horse and hound, horsemart and horsequest etc.

Now I found a few with the same phone number and thought it would be good to view them as it saves traveling miles just to see one horse, so before I called I decided to look on the BS at the records of these horses. Three of the four horses advertised were advertised with the wrong age, a 15 year old horse was advertised as 13 yrs and the others were a year or to older than advertised. They are all advertised as jumping and winning at a high level, One said jumping up to 1.30m with a great record and in fact the only thing it has done in a year is a 70cm!!! before that a 1.05m over a year ago and never placed in a 1.20m plus. One of the other horses also says recent winnings at 1.30m, again only been placed in a British novice since 2005!!! the prices for the horses are from 7 to 12k.

If the lies start in the advert, what rubbish would I get fed if I went to see these horses and would they pull the same horses out to show me that are advertised or do I go looking at a warmblood and get shown a cob. of course I won't bother to pick the phone up but this makes me angry and not wanting to trust anyone.

Im about to advertise my boy 16.2, 9 years bsja winnings if your interested pm me!

Agree though, nothing worse than thinking the horse maybe perfect to find is not as your were led to belive.

If they have the same phone number then chances are it's a dealer who should have identified themselves as that in the advert - if they haven't, that would make me very very suspect.

If you are looking to up to 12k you have a very, very decent budget, I suggest you post again asking for recommendations for decent dealers of sports horses and go by word of mouth.

You shouldn't trust anyone and you are right to do background checks on the horses where you can. The internet is a really useful tool.

Ditto this.

Post a thread asking if anyone bought from xyz and ask for feedback, good and bad. Bad will be via PM.

If you see a horse ask if anyone recognises him / her.

Also don't be persuaded by accreditation to BS, BE or BD as this doesn't guarantee a safe purchase.

Just a quick point about BS records, online it doesnt show everything. I think it will only show double clears and winnings in qualifying classes like bn, disc etc. My boy has jumped double clears in a few am classes and they are not recored online, i know he jumped them as i was riding him.
You can have a complete print out i think of all their record but will have to pay for it.
Im this case i would agree that all is not quite what they have made out so i can understand why you feel fed up but unfortunately bs records dont seem as comprehensive as BE so you dont get the full picture.

What is it you are looking for? Might know of some xx

Also agree with vam - full BS records would be better than just DC's

What exactly are you looking for and where are you? My yard owner also has a lovely mare for sale depending on exactly what you want- sounds like may not be experienced enough. With Taft budget you shouldn't have too much of a problem once you have sorted the bad ones out. Again totally agree about BS records. Why can't they show everything? Surely if BE can do it they can manage???

I have absolutely no idea why people lie as they are wasting their own time as well as yours. Their only hope is that someone inexperienced comes along, or someone doesn't ask the right questions or check the details. Sadly honesty in not always prevalent and reputation not considered. Check the reputation of dealers and producers, and listen to your gut feeling, too.

Best of luck finding a super new horse.

i agree, it is so annoying! me and my mum are currently looking for a showjumper for me to regain confidence on... and we have looked at several (with honest owners, just happened not to suit)

however.... there was an advert we saw that described a horse as an ANGEL and with further investigation it turned out to be a horse that someone we know has previously owned and sold to this person as a ''problem'' horse....

some people shock me... lying, especially in the horse world where it is such a dangerous horse!! (and without the danger aspect... there is risk of ruining someone's confidence for good!)

horrendous.

It’s a shame that more people don’t do the background checks you have.

If more people did background checks these people wouldn’t get away with half the horror stories we seem to hear about so often.

I do a lot of checking. Try all sorts of things including the owner's FB account - lots of people have these open to public view and it doesn't bode well if their last status update is something like 'that ******* horse just dumped me for the last time, it's definitely for sale now' and you can also have a nosey through photos too. If there's a link to a video have a nose through their youtube account for other videos - often not quite as flattering ;) - they may have picked the Disco DC video to show prospective buyers but forgotten about the vid of it pulling out its dirty stop party trick that's also there to see.

A few quiet phone calls are often surprisingly revealing too.

It is a minefield and one i don't envy you for it! I have a lovely one that i have just made the heartbreaking decision to sell. Up until my accident he had a fantastic compettion record but has since lived at a 5 star holiday resort where he has done very little and enojyed life! I have just sold my other one and again it possibly didn't read well on paper but the people who have bought her say what an absolute star she is! It is just reading between the lines. I know of a couple of people whoh have been well and truly had by the people they have bought off and in fact one is going to court! I can't believe what some people will sell.!

Good luck in finding what you are looking for!

Well we have found one to look at that is owned by a friend of a friend, sounds perfect and we have seen it out at shows, its not been advertised but what we have been told is the same as the BS record, so that's a good start.

If anyone else is looking for horses, please make sure the age etc is correct, the ones I was talking about are on horsequest and they now have sold on two of them! I wonder if the buyers are aware of what lies they may have been told????

All double clears in am classes should be on your horses record, even if it wasn't placed.
