Sorry this is ranty and when I've calmed down then I'll probably laugh about it. I'm in the process of backing my stupidly big 3 year old. We have prior to today lunged with bridle, boots, roller etc without a problem. Today though she apparently had forgotten all of this and indeed how to put one foot in front of the other. Didn't want her bridle on so that was a faff, got her out and she 'moon walked' to the paddock like she'd never worn boots before then asked her to walk off on a circle and she exploded......then cantered round for 20 mins before stopping...... asked her to walk on again and she did the same. Conceded that it wasn't going to happen so rather than fight I gave up and put her away again.....I know, stupid but so don't want to ruin her...... there's always tomorrow though!

Is she bitted? Young horses get their 3rd premolars at about 3, if she's teething she might be feeling a bit sensitive in her mouth.

Just a thought...

I have had a bad day lunging my 2 year old to...maybe the babies are just having a naughty day lol.

I don't actually plan to break her properly this year but she's HUGE (16.2hh already) and my plan was to teach her to lunge with tack on this year and then she can be properly broken next year. We only work her 3 times a week, usually just for 20 mins, she's also usually not too bad - just had an off day I think!

Or maybe its because he needs to be put back in the field for at least another year to mature before you lunge him..........
