I have both of them shod in New Balance shoes all round ... regularly, every 5 weeks in the Summer and 6 weeks in the winter .... all pre booked in advance ... so he knows I am his 'regular' income

Here we go ...

£70 plus VAT per set in January 2008
£72 plus VAT per set in April 2008
£74 plus VAT per set n July 2008

This is to just hack out 2 - 3 times at week at the most

Does the Farrier not realise that he will be doing himself out of business, as in the end I will have to say enough is enough ......well mine clearly doesn't

I was wondering when this would start filtering through. Am afraid to say that it probably won't be the last increase and whilst I'm not usually a defender of farriers, its probably not their fault.

I've been told at work this week that the price of steel has gone up 60% recently worldwide and is set to continue to rise, so I would imagine the price of shoes will rocket.

Add to that the rocketing cost of fuel and its no wonder.

your in the South.. your in sussex.. sorry... your gonna have to pay...

I telll you what icant wait for?!!!!

The DAY THAT PEOPLE STOP WINGING ABOUT THERE FARRIERS!!!

really get my back up...

Do you whinge when you have to pay your vet £40 quid just to come to the yard?

no

so dont whinge when you have to pay your farrier to shoe your horse.

You do have the most expensive farrier in the country I think! Mike used to charge £60 + vat 10 years ago

I dont' know if someone can calculate the %% increase in 17 years, but it started off at £32.25 (he did not charge VAT then!) ...... but only had Motor then (bless his little cotton socks

well, if i was just hacking out two or three times a week, i'd have the horse trimmed and buy a set of Marquis supergrip boots, which i use on my big lad. (he's nannying the youngsters so i won't have him shod.)
otherwise, sounds pretty good value to me. your farrier's costs will have gone up too, don't forget. he comes to your yard, it costs him diesel etc.

Sorry not whingeing about my Farrier ... just the costs going up 2 times this year ... for a Guaranteed Income!

Are you a Farrier, Farrier's wife and how much do you/he charge per set?

Mine charges £60 but is so polite and reliable
smirk.gif
The farrier that shoed Tia before charged £50 but the shoes would start falling off by the 6th week. New farrier's shoes are much much better, really good quality and they stay on lol

I am very fortunate that he is an excellent Farrier (one of the best) .....

But to increase twice in 7 months .... my point being is when is this all going to end .........

The cost of living has gone up so much though the last few months, he's just trying to cover his outgoings, partic as he spends so much time driving using fuel.

Have you queried it with him - maybe he didn't realise he had already increased his charges to you this year. (Farriers are not the best at admin etc!) I must say he does sound expensive, but farriers in general are having to put up their prices as costs keep rising - diesel costs have shoot up particularly.

Surely there are other farriers locally who could do yours - there are plenty that do NB these days.

i trained as a farrier.

My farrier charges £60 a set in stoke-on-trent.. (one of the poorest areas in britian)

And im happy to pay it.. he is newly qualified.. fresh.. healthy.. good with the horses... good with me.. does a bloody good job and shoes say on.. (except ted's off for.. but then they always have withhimm he enver holds this foot.)

Unfortunately he won't do himself out of business cos he knows, as well as every other farrier in the land, that there are a shortage of farriers.....

i've been told that there is a shortage of good farriers

Yes I did kind of have a laugh about it with him, as I suspected he would put the costs up again, due to Fuel costs .....

He has 2 apprentices on the go, one can work on his own and the other has just started on the long road to his final profession
smile.gif

I trust him with my old boys life, so would not change him for his sake and he got him through his Lamititis, along with the Vet and ME

I have thought about having another Farrier shoe my other horse, but I do not want to fall out with mine, as I know he is good ....

As I said .... this is really a general cost of living rant .... that's all

was that for the lovely Ralph's benefit then?
My farrier is lovely but very shy, but I must admit I do my hair and put make up on when he comes to shoe Axey

I used to quite like Mike years ago but he was married then...

If someone wants to moan abnout their farrier, let them...
the price increase will prob be due to fuel etc., still doesn't mean we can't moan!

I wanted to bring my old farrier up here with me when we moved back up from Cornwall. (the looks had nothing to do with it, honest

)He is bloody good & doesn't charge overly OTT at something like £50/£60 a set.

Excellent with the horses. Brilliant with my mares' not so great hooves. Will do an extra favour or two occasionally & a really nice guy. He's generally punctual, will fit you in if he can, is a fast worker & I just cannot recommend him highly enough.

When I first had S about 10 years ago, she had terrible feet. Constantly splitting, cracking & chipping. Awful. Within a year they were looking good & now I have barely any problems.

He is one of the more expensive ones in the area but IMO, you get what you pay for & I'd rather pay £15 more for guaranteed good service & excellent workmanship than I would for shoddy workmanship that causes more problem & expense than it's worth.

I know what I'm getting with him & the peace of mind is worth the cost alone.

As the old saying goes, No foot, no 'oss.
