Grrrrrrrrr.....Hack last night!!!

As part of my training for the 3DE im competing at in September i have started hacking 3 nights during the week instead of just once at the weekend.

Lats night i had a lovely hack up until i was on my way home. It fab near me as its all country lanes and i rarely have to venture onto the main road.

So i was coming down a very quiet country lane which i have ridden down for years and i heard a car coming very fast towards me round a sharp blind bend. He suddenly appeared at very high speed, slammed his breaks on and swerved in the road. Came to a halt and said to me "not the best place to f*****g ride is it?" I was gob smacked so i replied "its a country lane you should slow down around corners you clearly cant see around" I then noticed he had a child, no older than 2 or 3, in the back seat wearing a seat belt but no booster chair.

I carried on past and he proceeded to do a wheel spin screeching his tyres and chucking up loads of smoke whilst hanging out of the window looking back at me.

I can only assume he was trying to spook Jed who luckily is pretty bomb proof when it comes to things like that!

I then was very shaken up and worried incase he turned around and came back for a second round.

It has now made me think there is actually no where safe to ride any more when you have people like this on the road.

You poor things, sadly most riders have horror stories like this including myself. Too late now but if it happend again try to get number plates, police will caution him at least. I just wish they could know the terrifiying feeling of hearing the speed they are coming at you at and not being able to do anything. Extra polos for your ace horse though

Wow he sounds charming! There are some lovely people around, aren't there? What worries me is that he's obvioulsy breeding as well!

I've had so many incidents on the road I can't count them all, but they are not going to stop me hacking out

I did look back to try and get his registration but i couldnt see the car for smoke from the tyres.

I know shocking to think there is a mini him in the world.

It wont stop us hacking either. Ill just take a pellet gun next time and shoot people like that horrible man in the eye hehe!

Well if he has that little consideration for the safety of his child I suppose it would be too much to expect that he would have any for other road users

I have to ride for a short distance on a busy A road. It almsot put me off moving to my yard, but having done it for a few months I find it far preferable to country lanes. Its a straight stretch and you can see things a long way off. I find it far less scary than that horrible feeling of hearing something approach fast round a blind bend when you have nowhere to go.

Oh dear, thank goodness your horse is a star and was good! You were doing nothing wrong, he was breaking the law by not having his child in a booster chair (I trust it wasn't an emergency!) and driving dangerously. Should have been castrated long ago to prevent him breeding by the sounds of it!

I had a grrrr moment last night too, some young lad and his girlfriend in a rover screamed past us on our way out, making my nervy lad jump and have a bit of a dance

But he didn't nap so i was pleased with him, then similar to you they came back up the lane round a blind bend (having already seen me riding out) at a stupid speed and screached to a halt behind me, he started to shout, his gf looked horrified, but then the silly cow started to laugh as lad danced round and generally got really stressed

I took reg number and reported them, police said there's not a lot they can do grrrrr!!!

Good Jed though for being so calm, often horses amaze me the way they cope with things!

OP and Oliver_Twist - I know exactly how you feel and sympathise!!

However, the police should have taken statements from both of you and acted on the information. See my earlier post re Near miss and mad woman, and today's update.

The police did speak to the woman who gave us verbal and were also interested in the lads in the other car, if I had their number or a decent description, they would have followed it up. I would really encourage you to call the police again and insist they act, these people shouldn't be allowed to get away with it!

I work for Derbyshire County Council and I have found that they and most other councils are getting on the horse band wagon, I would ask them if they can do anything to stop or slow mad men down. Never know thay may do something.

I agree there is nowhere safe now, childish knobs are finding it more and more funny to go racing round bendy lanes...

I always think if they cannot have a care for others can they at least not think that once my half a tonne horse sits on your windscreen, there's not going to much left of the car, you, or your nipper...

Sadly they seem to have the brain capacity of a gnat and should have been drowned at birth.

If you report any incident to the police always ask for an 'Incident number' as this means they have to log it in to the system. If you provide them with a registration number then they will tag it with the information that you supplied to them on their national database of vehicles. Next time the vehicle is involved in an incident then the details will come up and they will know there has been previous reports of the vehicle being driven badly.
