Burgers 'withdrawn' in horsemeat scandal still on sale

The BBC claims that a brand of burgers, which were meant to have been withdrawn after the horsemeat scandal broke, were found on sale in Tesco in Oxford. The beef quarter pounders, from the 'Free From' range, were removed from the supermarket's freezers as a precaution after the scandal - although no horsemeat was found in the brand itself.

However, a BBC reporter managed to buy some from a branch in Cowley.

When the reporter took the burgers to a self-service checkout, the till came up with a warning that the brand had been withdrawn. However, a member of staff over-rode the warning and allowed the reporter to leave with the burgers.

Scandal
The horsemeat scandal broke earlier this month, when an investigation by the Republic of Ireland's food safety authority found that horse DNA was contained in samples of beef burgers being sold in supermarkets in the UK and Ireland. It found 29% horsemeat in one Tesco burger and traces in another. It also found contaminated burgers from Iceland, Lidl, and Aldi (although the Aldi burgers are not sold in the UK).

Tesco said at the time that the affected lines were Tesco Everyday Value 8 x Frozen Beef Burgers, Tesco 4 x Frozen Beef Quarter Pounders (454g) and Flamehouse Frozen Chargrilled Quarter Pounders. It also withdraw a number of other products purely as a precaution, including the 'Free From' quarter pounders bought by the reporter.

It tried to undo some of the damage by printing full page adverts in a number of newspapers, saying: "We and our supplier have let you down and we apologise. So here's our promise. We will find out exactly what happened and, when we do, we'll come back and tell you. And we will work harder than ever with all our suppliers to make sure this never happens again."

It added that it had "immediately withdrawn from sale all products from the supplier in question".

The discovery that this withdrawal hasn't gone to plan will be a major embarrassment for Tesco.

Other withdrawals
A number of other supermarkets have also withdrawn burgers made from unaffected lines at plant where the horsemeat was found (pictured), and at other plants owned by the same business.

Waitrose did so today as a precaution, despite having visited the factory and being satisfied that its products were not contaminated. In a statement it said it was 100% confident that its burgers were 100% beef, but was taking the precaution.

Burger King has also announced today that it will no longer be using burgers from the affected supplier - Silvercrest.

In all, over 10 million burgers have been taken off the shelves. The ones bought by the BBC, it seems, slipped through the net.

Tesco told the BBC: " We are urgently investigating how this product came to be on a shelf in store. The block on purchase at the checkout should not have been overridden. We sincerely apologise for this, and we have spoken to the store to ensure that this does not happen again."

PS. With the amount of rubbish that goes into burgers (and sausages), they'd probably benefit from a bit of lean horse meat in them, rather than the horrible fat, oily stuff that you get in the frozen section.

The problem I see is that Tesco were told to remove them and the checkout girl over rides the scan saying this item has been withdrawn what is the point of with drawing an item if staff let it go through ???

It's one of those things I guess. Product is on the shelf, out of thousands upon thousands, there will be mistakes and it probably isn't the only store with them on the shelf.

Letting it through the till... Error of judgement from an individual, and no doubt she will be reprimanded for it.

Cest la vie. :o

My friend is a manager in Tesco and they had the email saying 1 packet had got through a checkout (not in their store)

apparently that person will be sacked :(

Like people say the horse is probs the best things in those burgers.....

I work in the transport dept for a tesco site and we are receiving the horse burger stock back daily, however horse meat has now been found in spaghetti bolognaise also - not sure which line though. Looks like we may be snowed under with returning frozen meats ..................

I doubt the horse meat found in the burgers is from a beautiful juicy rump. It'll be the same grizzle, fat and skin that makes up the rest of the 'meat' content.
The good cuts of meat don't 'accidently' fall into Tesco's frozen meat products.

For those happy to eat horse meat products, that's fine, but do you ever read the labels of the food you eat and make a choice?
Should tesco just label chicken, lamb, pork and beef as simply meat, if you're not bothered what animal it came from ?

Can just hear it now from tea tables all around the country-

' Mum, is this chicken ?'

'Haven't a clue son, it just says European meat product'.

I am not particularly bothered whether I eat horse meat or not, however, I would like the supermarkets to label my food honestly.

The trouble is, we're all about money & greed. No doubt the meat supplier offered these burgers/meat at a cheap price & as businesses it's all about profit - not quality.

Buy rubbish expect rubbish.

All people have to do is educate themselves as to the origins of their meat and buy locally and you won't have these problems.

If you can't afford quality meat then eat veggie in the week and have a good ethically sourced roast on a sunday. We don't have to eat meat everyday.

As for sacking the assistant who overrode the system that is ridiculous. Tills crash/ stall / don't scan all the time and she probably had a queue of people and was trying to get through them as quickly as possible so people don't wait. If anyone should be reprimanded it should be whoever didn't take it off the shelves when they should have done.
Why do the hardworking shop staff have to have a token ' sacking' to appease the media. Bad way to treat people.

When OH was at a football match some time back he got a cup of tea at half time. They were also selling meat pies. He asked what kind of meat pies they were and was told, 'They're just meat'. He didn't buy one!

, 'They're just meat'.

I used to play snooker at the Lucania Temperance Billard Hall years ago ( there were hundreds of these dens of inquity up and down the country at the time, they were built so that criminals had somewhere warm and dry to plan their next blag!) the guy who ran the tea bar at our one was nickednamed "Meat" for the above reason!
