Once again I feel the need to start this with a "warning, bad mood" notice!
Anyway, I posted yesterday about having a week off and the weather being shocking, not getting my baby ridden etc. After I did so, I wondered if I was just being a fair weather rider and that if it wasn't so windy today I was going to ride her.
I got up to once more torrential rain, so took them in and stood them in for a fair while with haylage to warm up. I took someone's advice from yesterday and met a friend and her little baby for lunch followed by Starbucks and cake
. It seemed to have stayed dry during lunch so I thought Right - stop being a wimp and just ride her, you will feel so much better if you do.
Stern self-talking to taken care off, I loaded up the car (have to transport to a school nearby) and then sheltered in the tack room waiting for a hail storm to pass
. It was blue skies when I arrived but a black cloud looming so tacked up in the trailer and waited for another hail storm to pass. I sooo nearly went home at this point but gave myself another talking to, and jumped on as soon as the storm passed.
I'd only been on about 5 mins and was feeling very pleased - young horse was being well behaved even after a 5 day break, starting to learn to go into corners properly etc. I was beginning to plan my post to you, all smug and happy, when pone started focussing on the house next to the school. Sure enough, the big courtyard door opened and the owner's sister came out with their two dogs - both of whom are puppies and not met horses before. One is a bulldog, and one a wolf cross
. They are both really sweet but big, boisterous and badly behaved. Horse froze, which was fine, but then the dogs spotted me and came into the school. Sure enough, it all went horribly wrong as horse did a little leap and buck, dogs got excited and chased her, she went into full rodeo, catapulting me off and managing to kick my knee hard in the process
Luckily the dogs then dive-bombed me instead so we were able to get them locked up again. They weren't attacking her at all, just didn't know what to do with this HUGE dog, and she had never really met a big dog before either.
Anyway, I got back on, she was ok actually, did one of the best canters I've had from her before, really up in front and feeling like you could jump easily out of it. Unfortunately it was threatening to tip it down again, and I was really in quite a lot of pain, so called it quits.
I can now hardly move, although sadly with very little to show for it. Had to use the trailer to turn the horses out again (field is half a mile away) as no way could I walk them that far.
I am now sitting here having had 3 ibuprofen, 2 arnica, and one glass of red wine
. Perhaps this is why this post has become so verbose....!!!
Sorry for the length of this. Bl00dy horses (or dogs??). I just had this feeling that I was riding against fate - I thought it meant I was just going to get soaked, not take a kicking
. Hopefully though my youngster hasn't realised that the rodeo buck is an effective way to make me dismount
(By the way, the girl looking after the house didn't know I was going to be there, was hugely apologetic, and also a nurse who kindly offered to patch me up. It was just one of those things...)
