Can any one shed any light on why my Mums horse is so grumpy!?
We moved him to the new yard about 2 weeks ago and he is alsways in a bad mood and we are hoping its not thats he's unhappy at the new yard.
When Mum is grooming him on his back legs and inbetween his front legs, he gets really vicious and even went to bite her last night. Also the new yard is in a barn and as Max is so huge, when tied up outside his stable and another walks behind him he kicks out, and he's not don that before! He kicked out late the other night and very nearly got me!

Its making my Mum very unhappy and not very confident handleing him. He is fine in the field and plays all day with the youngster, but in his stable he just pulls faces all the time.
Please help, we've got enough grumpy men in our lives at the moment without having another one!!

Ah, ok - just wonderd as Amy has grills between her and her neighbour, which makes life interesting. She hates it.

Sounds like he needs time to settle in. And if you were at your previous yard for a while that's understandable. Certainly wouldn't tie him up outside his stable if there is a chance he will kick others. And until he's settled, tie him up in his stable.

Poor old chap. I'm sure he'll be fine though.

I do hope he just needs some more time to settle, coz him being so grumpy is making Mum unhappy and I hate seeing her down, she goes up the yard to enjoy herself and her horse and the moment she just wants to get done asap and go home!

Well part of horse ownership is experiencing the highs and lows.

Maybe mum could spend more time with the horse as a way of cheering him up, rather than legging it??

it does sound like hes not settled, i find most horse only move when they are sold. i dont think your mum is helping either if she spends a little more time with him it may reassure him that shes not leaving him too.
im sure things will get better soon once hes established himself within the herd.
good luck and tell your mum to keep her chin up.

Could he be feeling claustrophobic? Moved my horse to a new yard a few weeks ago and his new stable was in a barn. he was ok, but not 100% and last weekend, he totally freaked out. Luckily a stable outside had become available and I have moved him into that and he is now his old self again. I think he missed all the comings and goings.

i agree that it may be the barn thats upsetting him. My boy gets very tense when he's inside the barn area and would never settle in a barn style stable- he likes to have the world passing him by. Is there no way you can change to an outside stable instead - if not then he probably will settle eventually .
