I got my horse in February and I've noticed that she's just never really excited about being around me. I usually have no problem bonding with any horse and I spend time with her almost every day. A lot of the time I don't even spend with her in the saddle, just on the ground doing stuff trying to make her interested in me. She has been in a lot of homes and passed around a lot and I'm wondering if maybe she just doesn't want to get close to me yet? I hope this will change.. Thoughts ?

Patience and time. Horses are genuine, you can't force a bond. Keep spending time with her as you are doing, without being too much in her face. Once the days start to get lighter, you'll be able to get out hacking which is great for increasing trust in each other.
She's a lucky mare to have someone prepared to put the time and effort in. It has been said that it takes 4 seasons to know a horse, which I think is a realistic starting point. Just enjoy her and things will click into place.
FWIW, my mare is a non demonstrative kind of girl but if I ever I go away, the YO remarks on how much she seems to miss me being around.

My mare can be a right grumpy bag sometimes! The first year I had her, we had so many ups and downs I nearly gave up on her. I've had her 3 1/2 years now, and I like to think we have a great bond, she can still be grumpy, she is quite dominant and likes her space. In the field, she is different and comes to see me every time and is better when I'm in the stable with her as opposed to outside by her stable.

I have never really bonded with a horse like her, but I trust her and we know each other inside out. We have had problems with health issues for the past year and a bit, so I am hoping next year will be our year.

I think mares or some mares tend to be one owner horses. I see a different side of her (her soft, sweet side). I had to leave her a the vets this year and last year, when I went to pick her up I said one word and she let out the biggest whinny ever (which made me cry). It sad, but it makes me realise she may actually like me sometimes.

Stick with it, it really is worth it. I wanted a gelding, but think I would stick to mares from now on.

I hope you both have lots of fun together!

We've had my son's shitland X for about 15months now. Although she is a nice little thing, very quiet and easy to handle, she could take or leave the cuddles.

She was ill in June this year, since then she's become a lot friendlier, comes up for fuss in the field, normally her head is literally glued to the floor and whickers a welcome.
