GSD considerations as family pets

We have a lovely GSD x husky. About a year ago we also got a king charles who now tries to rule the roast and he happily lets her although I'm sure with one swipe of his paw he could knock her out. He really is the kindest, most patient and sensitive dog we could ask for, the king charles climbs all over him and he just ignores her. Although he is a bit strong on walks and is very protective over his garden, running around howling if someone passes, however he isn't so protective about the house?!
 
Not a huge GSD fan - sorry, bad experience of an over boisterous one as a child - much to OHs disgust as he had one when growing up and always maintained she was the most loyal and trusting dog ever.

However, I am coming round, a lady at the yard is a police woman and has a 'failed' police GSD, he's the most lovely soft playful lump of fluff I've ever come across - you can see why he didin't make it as a police dog, total lack of agression. Even my spaniel puts him in his place!

Good time to lose internet connection with a GSD thread ongoing! Thanks Murphy88 for confirming you survived growing up in a house full of GSDs. You probably don't remember the night you spent in a moses basked on the floor of the whelping kennel while a bitch whelped but don't think it did you any harm, maybe thats where the vet thing started

When I was born my family had around 20 GSDs, the fewest I have lived with is the 3 I have now, I have never been bitten by one, although have been nipped by smaller breeds.
CC and the others have said it all really, do your research and bring up and train your GSD properly and I don't think you will find a better dog.
And any excuse for gratuitious pics.

Thank you. She is actually a little monster, in the nicest sense of the word, Evie known as Evil! However her temperament is wonderful, she has been quite hard work (she's 21 months old now) but it was a line I wanted and was prepared for it, which is why I said research is important. For a first time owner I would suggest you make sure the parents (particularly the dam) are laid back and calm.
 
Don't usually post here, but noticed the thread on the main index. I bred GSDs for many years abroad and my 3 kids grew up with them. They were wonderful and would be so careful with them as wobbly toddlers and help them to walk. On one occasion a visiting toddler picked up a toy wooden hammer and started beating "Penny" over the head, but all she did was close her eyes and whimper. The mother who was sat next to the child did nothing, I rushed across the room and grabbed the child. Obviously they were never invited again. I have other stories but you would only get bored. I expected my dogs to treat children as special puppies. I even did Schutzhund with one of them - she loved her criminal and would lick him all over when he took off the padded suit.
I haven't bred any dogs in the UK, but have had 2 rescues. Taking on a Rescue should be done with care. Retraining is not easy. So many people think they have to "train" their dog to guard. Then when its biting the postman because thats what it was "trained" to do, they get rid of it.
I love this breed and will never have anything else.
 
Lol! One of my friends as a scar on her face from when a GSD lost it's temper and bit her when she was a toddler. In the dog's defence though my friend had hit it over the head with a frying pan! Think she learnt the hard way that wasn't how to treat a dog! hehe

Bearsmum, sorry to be pedantic, but 'aggressive' dogs don't tend to make great police dogs or sports/trial dogs - the dog has to be confident, not aggressive - an aggressive dog won't let go, a confident one will

He is just about at the height limit for the breed.
But not ginormous, 60-65cms at the withers.

The female looks smallish and a nice type and like I say she has Enzo, who was a good male. Solo throws nice, well boned animals with that lovely red gold pigment

I just sent a terribly long waffly email to the breeder - showing my ignorance lol wasn't sure what to call that colour so I said I was ideally looking for temp. first but a sideline wish of mine was to have a very dark sable or red coat.

I hope she doesn't laugh! or He - it could be a he..?
 
You won't get a dark sable in show lines. You'll get more the colour of my boy.

The dog going over the A-Frame in my pics up there is a dark sable, almost black, mine is the more run of the mill colour sable.
With Solo, like I say, you will get that lovely black and red gold. Going to PM you a list/pics of his progeny in the UK.
 
What colour is Booboos GSD, thats the colour I am thinking of but likely not explaining it well.

The colour i am not keen on because I am a fussy fool is the greyish tones, which I think you said was a working dog colour anyway?
 
Awww! Roly!!! Very cute!

The Nixtev breeder is a she! Do mention Dizzy as she usually has long waiting lists for her puppies, although this one sounds like a large litter. We had a recommendation from the Spitz breeders as good owners and got talking to her that way. I'd give her a call and talk to her directly!

I'm another in favour of GSDs as house/family dogs.

I've had 5 now (one bitch and 4 dogs) - one a rescue with a 'difficult' past (he had a human bite mark out of the top of one ear
