Hey guys,
I need a massive favour...
we're doing a project in veterinary anatomy at university on the confirmation of GSDs - working, showing and sports types.
For the initial part of the project, we have to produce a 'fact sheet' almost of the confirmation of sports type GSDs - so dogs participating in obedience, agility, working trials and Schutzhund.
I need to obtain some pictures to illustrate these categories and thought it would be nice if I could get some of the brilliant pics you guys have taken and put on here before.
If you could be so kind to give me permission to use these within the project and post them on here I'd be most grateful!
Thanks,
K xx

I'll send you some later - but a lot of the dogs I have posted do showing and work, they are not mutually exclusive.
So I am not sure it would be accurate to put them in different categories?
I do find it a wee bit disappointing that at this level, people in influence might still promote the myth that working dogs cannot show, and show dogs cannot work - it does nothing for the reputation or promotion of the breed. Not blaming you, JMO!

If you want any pics from me pleaselet me know which ones and I will send them, but like CC I would just point out that my dogs fit into more than one of the categories you have mentioned. Although recently I have done very little in the way of competition, all my previous dogs were successfull in the show ring and agility, and most of the dogs I know do at least 2 disciplines, don't forget all the show dogs in Germany (and many over here now) also compete in Schutzhund.
Looking at the description you give of sports types, what does your uni consider "working" GSDs do?
Again not getting at you, it sounds as if your uni is jumping on the show dogs not being fit for purpose bandwagon, which is a shame.:(
Good luck with your project.

Couldn't quite understand the mentality myself TBH - I don't know any dogs off the top of my head which are purely for one discipline! Plenty of the dogs I know compete in shows and also do obedience and vice versa, I know working dogs that go to shows and etc etc!

The final assignment is to actually examine one German Shepherd (who has apparently won international working trials - I don't know any more info), take photos and assess the confirmation of the animal leading to an essay about its structure and whether it is 'fit for purpose' - I think I will have to brush up a bit more as have done most confirmation work on animals who have been bred to show and not sure what the differences would be? (I thought surely they would all conform as much as possible to the breed standard)

A lot of people in the class have never had the pleasure of handling a GSD before so I can sort of see the point of them making it more clean cut than it is!

I think we're going to handle this first part by explaining the general structure and confirmation of GSDs and giving brief examples of 'sports' they are able to partake in so any pictures of Schutzhund/protection training, agility or obedience would be fantastic.
(MM, I'd class 'sports GSDs' as working dogs tbh. I totally agree with both of you, I'm just not too good with words, but you know my stance on GSDs! :p)
Thanks, K x
