I am looking for a GSD puppy, but I want a big chunky straight backed old fashioned english type, not a sloped backed german type. Does anyone know of a breeder that has a litter available.

PM me if you prefer.

Thanks
:D

Don't know of any of that type at the moment, hopefully dwteam can point you in the right direction. Please make sure you check hip and elbow scores, not just of the parents but back in the pedigree too (you may not find elbow scores further back in all fairness as these have only been done in GSDs more recently). Good luck, look forward to an update with puppy pics.:D

Thank you MurphysMinder for your advice. Unfortunately dwteam's contact does not have any puppies left :( So I am still on the look out. We have owned GSD's for the past 20 years and unfortunately my daughter has just lost her beloved Lindt (RIP).

Sorry to hear about your dog.

This is the place we got Dizzy from after searching for a while for a more straight-backed litter (although I am not knowledgeable about breeding GSDs so maybe my idea of straight-backed is not your idea of straight-backed!!) http://www.nixtev.co.uk/

Unfortunately they don't have a litter at the moment, and you usually have to book a puppy well in advance with them, but they do have a 12month old bitch.

Have you considered an older rescue cruiseline, there are so many in need of a home. You may struggle to find what you are looking for in a pup, the link booboos put up carries English lines, any more "old English" than that wouldn't conform to the breed standard and possibly may not have had all health checks that the breed should have.

"big chunky straight backed old fashioned english type" - 'proper' GERMAN Shepherds? - the old fashioned GSD (they're only just over 100 years old) is actually grey, very tight coated, rangey and wirey, not big, tall, heavy and chunky (see link)

PM your location if you want suggestions of good, responsible breeders who health test their dogs, which to me, should be the priority for anyone buying a GSD puppy.

Sorry if I sound snarky, I think I do, reading that back :o I will help to the best of my ability if you like, feel free to tell me to bog off, but I would never recommend you or anyone buy from untested stock or lines known to carry epilepsy or HD (which, sadly, some of the English lines do to this day - I'm not saying German lines are problem free but there is more of an effort to stop problem lines and there is much more weight put on health testing)

As mentioned on another thread I have been observing all weekend the work that goes into training and working what some people would call/would assume are the 'slopey backed' dogs and it just irks me a little...I am exhausted just watching, and I did very little!

Some of us are banging our heads against the wall trying to improve health and unify the breed and if you must buy a pup rather than rescue/rehome a pup or older adult, I do urge you and anyone else to do your homework, looks are obviously what draws one to the breed in the first place but rewarding the breeders who do things properly is the best way to secure improvements for the breed in the future.
I know you are probably looking for a solid, friendly, family companion (with big bones and a straight back :p), but that is not mutually exclusive to health testing.

Sorry to hear about your boy x

CaveCanem, I didn't read your post as snarky at all, I think it is very important to make sure that any puppy comes from a reputable breeder who has put time and money into making sure that their puppies are as healthy as they possibly can be. I have had over the years both German and English lined GSD and all the dogs I have had have been super, super family pets (I do not show) With the exception of one that we purchased out of Germany, he was stunning, but very sharp. I personally don't like the roached backed low stung version with weak back ends that are being bred at the moment, they might appeal to some, but they are not my cup of tea.

Anyway, I am very pleased to say that we have found a litter and will view a female puppy a week tomorrow. What makes it even more special is that this little girl is by the same stud dog, so we actually know the lines. The bloodlines include GSD's from Guidewell (guide dogs for the blind) as well as police dogs. A half brother to this little girl has just finished his training and is the first ever GSD to be dually trained, as a guide dog and a wheelchair assistance dog, he is apparently the first in Europe.

I am hoping to see some photos of her todays, can't wait.

:D

No definitely don't want to upset the Mafia, you have been warned.:D
The Guide Dogs at Leamington had a couple of brood bitches off my mum many moons ago, they wouldn't show up on pedigrees now but would be interested to see breeding. I think you will find the majority of police dog lines are German but may well be less angulated which is what you are looking for.

Oh, good luck :) would love to see pics.

I dunno where people are seeing all these roach-backed weak-backended dogs, guess I must be lucky!

Also Serena2005 on here is looking to rehome a chunky grey lad but hopefully this wee one will be the girl for you :D

Received these pics of the puppy we will be going to see next week :)

She is gorgeous, looks from that second pic as if she might be full coated and lovely and dark, she looks almost bi colour in the first picture. My experience is that pups that have their ears up early are always little live wires (totally unscientific but seems to be the case).

You are right, she is going to be a full coated girlie when all grown up. I can't wait to see her, not that we have decided to take her or anything yet, but she is going to be called Kinder. ;)

Of course, it is going to be a rational decision.:D I remember going to pick a pup from a breeding terms litter, I announced on the way there that I was going to be sensible and go for the pup with the best construction, needless to say one little horror launched at me and fixed on my shoe lace and that was it, never even looked at the others never mind stacked them up and studied shape.:o
