I'm going to do regular updates on this kind of thing until I find my forever dog(s) - shhh don't tell my mother!

Here's Sidney

http://s10.zetaboards.com/biggsd/topic/7227854/12/

He has some issues with children (don't we all) but apart from that he sounds like Mr Perfect for my home, I'm going to speak to the rescue lady tonight and you never know I may have finally found my GSD :)

Hurray!

Who knows why he has issues with kids - but hopefully it is workable with - my friend's dog is very 'looky' with kids but only when they run around and squeal, he is one of these eastern European types with a high prey drive, as long as the kids are calm and gentle, he is fine.

Fingers crossed!

He seems to have had a very interesting few months of it - and lets face it thats enough to unsettle any dog. Hopefully with some consistency and rules he'll blossom.

Apparently he's HUGE, which is wonderful because I wanted a big one (dare I say that at 09.10am?!)

Home visit soon, spoken to the lady who does the preliminary phone checks - I don't think they'll be overly impressed with my back yard, but it is very well fenced and secure, so fingers crossed :)

So what - it's the walking/interaction that counts. I know plenty of people who's dogs spend their lives shut in 'big' back gardens whining at the door to be let in
Once they see how happy your little ones are i'm sure it will be a done deal :)

Good luck!

Good luck!

This! We have a tiny back garden - really tiny, Herman can cross it in three canter strides, but we have loads of interesting places to take him for lead walks if needs be and my FiL has 600 acres of arable land to walk on. Herman, bless him, won't go across a crop either, he sticks to the edge or in the tramlines apart from on the beanfield where FiL has said he will pay him in Gravy Bones to be Official Bird Scarer no 1.

Even if he doesn't get an off lead walk, which he mostly does because it makes my life 100 times easier if he's tired lol, if he gets enough mental exercise, he's happy. Kongs, Nina Ottossen toys (don't get the plastic ones for a GSD, Herman has them and has broken them fairly easily, I wish I'd got the wooden ones), stuffing plastic bottles with treats and carrots to block the end and a bone we got him which has a rubber ball in the middle and sort of nylabone-esque ends on it is a toy he loves at the moment - you can slot edible rings onto it and the dog has to chew them off. It's a rubbish description but Herman loves it and it keeps him quiet for ages.

In short  don't panic about the yard and mention you know about keeping life interesting... My friends 2 SH weims have a huge garden to play in but like mollichop said, they spend most of the time at the door wanting to be in, because they aren't being interacted with. A big garden isn't the be all and end all. It's nice and the only reason I'd move would be to move somewhere with a bigger garden but it isn't top of your dogs list of needs.

That was a ridiculously long way of saying :echo: Mollichop  Good luck, I really really hope Sidney is the one for you.

Thanks guys, I'm always hopeful but I've tried to stop setting my heart on the dogs now and just be "oh well" about them

Am secretly excited though!!

:)

Ok I'm about 3/4's through the adoption process, just a homecheck left to go now. They seem really positive and upbeat about my application.

I have one problem.

Getting him from Surrey to South Wales! :D

In all seriousness I am going to be in Reading on the weekend on the 22nd coming back on the 23rd, I could always do the bulk of it then as I live in South Wales... I had a GSD and he fit in the back of my car and travelled fine.

How very exciting for you.
