does anyone on here have guard dogs ??

having been broken into again , a lot of people suggest i get 2 german shepheards or rottweilers or something similar to be left at my yard over night.

Do they actually scare people off though ?? And can they really live outside in all weathers, its so cold at the moment

i've heard of a lot of guard dogs being stolen, fwiw. there used to be a couple of rottweilers at a place i knew, and they got stolen, as did their replacements. just one more thing to worry about imho.
tbh i'd try to get a mobile home at the yard, and have someone on site, much more of a deterrent.

My old livery yard in Kent had 5 GSD that lived in the tack room (I believe they now have kennels), we never had any break ins.

I think the owner would have a lot to answer to though if the dogs actually attacked an intruder, sadly.

Blimey !!

sorry i should have clarified this isn't a horsey yard its my work place. unfortunately i can't have anyone living here as it breaks tenancy rules. there is meant to be site security but we they do nothing and TBH can't really blame them - the sort of people that are doing these break in's arent the sort i'd want to get in the way of
have tried cctv but they are far too clever for all that.

I got the wrong end of the stick too, thought you meant horse yard.

Those kind of intruders wouldn't think twice about killing your dogs with a lump of poisoned meat.

Stupid question but is the place alarmed - our work place is linked straight to the police station, alarm sometimes goes off if we have a power cut etc and police are here in minutes.

sorry thats my fault its fair to assume yard is horsey as we are all horsey!

Its not alarmed because it has multiple entrance and exit routes (its a big place) it would be nigh on impossible to get it properly alarmed. we tried before but they broke into a fork lift and foamed the bell so it is almost unhearable.

I don't have anything to do with the police. They are useless. I have found and recovered more of my own plant than they have as they are too scared to go in and get it usually even if i find it and tell them where it is. anyway that is a totally different gripe

I heard about posoining, and was told thats why you must have 2 ?! not sure how that stops it.

Maybe i will just carry on securing the place as best i can, i thought i'd made it 100% secure but the crazy idiots risked life and limb climbing over a slippery muddy 4ft sheer drop bank with 1/4ton of equipment which they must have carried and then got it over the fence. would have been such a tragedy if they'd slipped and broken their legs/necks!!

i suppose if people are determind no dogs or security measures will really stop them in most instances. it might just scare off the lesser criminal as it might look like too much hassle if the dogs are pretty fierce

Agreed...this day and age dogs wont stop people breaking in....unless its my mams place...were there are hundreds of dogs barking at once...lol

can u have some kind of alarm rigged to your home...so u are aware of any break ins....either that or move the business.....they obviously intend to keep paying u a visist

Get geese. Seriously.

Evil sods they are, not above having a go at you and they will wake the devil if they are disturbed at night, they won't be tempted by a bit of meat and aren't as easy to catch as a dog, don't need exercising, are cheap to keep and feed. There was a saddlery where I was in Wales that kept them in his yard, I don't know if it did any good but it got him an awful lot of publicity!

A friend of mine years ago in Northants had 4 Rotties doped and bludgeoned to death, heartbreaking. They got a bunch of Geese and one attempt was made to break in again but the geese made such a racket that the alarm was raised.

I may be wrong (I usually am) but I think it is against the law to leave guard dogs loose on premises without a handler present. Also don't really think its any life for a dog, unless they are going to have loads of companionship during the day.

Ditto the geese they are evil

My friend had 3 GSDs as guard dogs, they would scare you to death, untill you were introduced, biggest softies ever

Yep, it is against the law to allow guard dogs to wander freely and unsupervised even on private land. They must be tied up but the lead musnt reach the extremities of your property. i.e. there needs to be a space around the edge of your property that any intruder/person can be without the dog being able to reach them. Crazy i know but tis the law

I went to a horse sale on Friday (wont say where it is) and in the yard of the house on site were 3 Bull Mastives, 2 rotties, a doberman and a GSD. As soon as we got out of the car they were alert and ready to pounce. I would think twice about going near that yard with that lot in there. They had kennels as well so not left out in all types of weather!

Thing is jingle you are a decently brought up girl - wether or not they'd have the same effect on a criminal is a different matter.

I wonder is it an offence to have any dog roaming your yard freely - or just a guard dog. How do they make the distinction I wonder and could you not just have a dog who lives at your yard - he's not a guard dog - he's the yard pet and he happens to frighten yobs away also......

The YO has two lurchers that live on site 24/7, although they are shut away at night, they are out all day and they do bark loudly when anyone comes past/into the yard that they don't know, so we always know when someone is about. Although one of them was stolen last year and was then recovered the day after. The tack room also has an asbestos roof and no windows, so the only way in is through the roof, and obviously cutting through the roof isn't a good idea, so that's a fairly good deterent!
