Finally got round to doing our first xc on saturday!

Agreed to go round to baby someone and their horse as my girl will jump most things (apart from ditches!), she always likes to be ahead which is why leading babies round is ideal for her.

Unfortunatly my 'pair' had absolutly no brakes and kept charging past us at a zillion miles per hour, which instantly made my girl race this charging beast which was in a word completly petrifying!

I tried aiming her at the open fences in a bid to make her back off, but this didnt work as she happily flew over them!

I also told my pair to go ahead and get on with it and let my girl calm down but her horse would nap and then not go forward so we soon caught up.

Anyway, when i was back at the lorry park i noticed that her mouth was bleeding slightly

I feel so mean and i am always so careful with her mouth (she is usually so sensitive so it was a real shock to battle her around the course like that!)

I sponged off the blood and it had already stopped bleeding so I dont think it is too bad, but just wondered how long i should wait before i put a bit in there again?

I have a hackamore which i used yesterday, but i dont have any steering with it! She is so fit I really dont want to let her have time off and i dont like lunging her much as she is 20 and shes not that sane doing small circles and always speeds round!

Any ideas? I do have a thin rubber happy mouth which i thought about using?

coat the ends of you bridle with vaseline..(the part which touches the mouth) also coat the sides of her mouth with vaseline...this should help the bit slide better and should help mousterise and help the wounds heal a bit.....

Glycerine's supposed to be good to help sore mouths. What bit do you use though? Maybe you need something that will give you more brakes to start with (maybe with a gag action?) so you're not applying pressure just to the mouth only?

I had her in a continental gag and a mexican grackle which i usually only have to touch her mouth with and i can stop, the other horse made her pay no attention at all to it all!

I will definatly try out those suggested creams as if i can stop the happy mouth snaffle from rubbing when i ride it will make things heal much better!

As for the hemmoroid (SP!) cream.... heard that was good for wrinkles around the eyes (on humans- not horses!!) !!
