sarcoptes species - think it is also known as Scabies...?
What is the best treatment? Do you know any websites out there which supply good treatments..?
I have three guinea pigs who seem to have it, have been using the spot on but does not seem to work well, disinfected the cage, they all eat very well and have greens, hay and hard food regularly....
I was going to wash them but my sister did it once before with her GP and it didnt do anything but upset the GP...
Any advice would be great...

I used Ivermectin for cows (worming)..... one drop on the back of the neck once a week for three weeks.... cured mange every time.

Probably not the thing to do.... sure someone will tell me that, but I have never had one keel over yet.... only the mites!!

I have just bought some beaphar anti-parasite spot on.
It says it is effective against lice, mange, mites, other mites and roundworms for up to 4 weeks.
I hope it does what it says on the box as one of our guinnies is very itchy.

beaphar anti-parasite spot on just used this one about a week ago and all mine are still itchy and looking scabby....
Little worried as never had it before and three of them now have it...ekk...!!
Thinking I might have to bathe them daily to get rid of it....Ill let you know how I get on

I have kept hundreds of guinea pigs, and i always use a little bit of eqvalan paste! just a tiny lick of the top, this has always cured mine and i have never lost one to it!

Hi, are you sure it is scabies as vitamin c deficiency looks very similar, bald patches with oozy scabs and very itchy. Do they get plenty of vit c rich veggies like red pepper, kiwi fruit, strawberries etc?
Are they on a specific guinea food like excel pellets or something similar?

If you need to up their vit c my vet told me to buy human chewable vit c tablets, some piggies will just much them and if not just crush them up with a little water and syringe in.

all as i know about gpigs is that you cant buy them without telling your mother, and then hide the cage under your bed *oops*
i didnt know they sounded like car alarms, she found it within hours

I use ivermectin on mine as well, just a drop behind the ears gets rid of everything.
To help clear up the scabby flakey bits i just pat some diluted benzel benzonate on or good old sudecrem works just as well
