Sorry not horse related but I know that some of you have guineas.

We've bought two new baby abyssinians today and one of them has a bald patch. I know that ideally you wouldn't buy a pet with a health problem but the people assured me it is clearing up and we really liked the girlies. They told me that the vet has told them it is a mild fungal infection and needs treating with fungicidal shampoo.

My local pet shop doesn't have any fungicidal shampoo, would dilute hibscrub do until I can get some?

my brother old guinea pig chester had a fungal infection and we didnt bath him i think the vet gave him some special food and very dilute hibbi scrub but im not sure

Hibiscrub shouldn't do any harm but it's not antifungal so prob wont do much good either. What about Malaseb? Though you may need a prescription for this.

dwi - is the bald patch sore at all? I'm sure you know that guinea pigs are very prone to mite infestations from hay but because they are so small (compared with a horse) the blood loss and infection that can be introduced from them scratching at the insatiable itching can cause long term health problems and death. I'd be very suspicious and take piggy straight to the vet. x

Ive got guinea pigs, one of mine suffered in the same way i used to use diluted benzly benzonate it cleard it up with in a few days. Sudocrem is good as well

thats got benzyl benzonate in it, can get abit messy though.
I would think diluted hibiscrub would be ok to wash him in first then apply the whatever.
Just make sure you dry the pig thouroughly before puttin him back in his hutch if hes outside, cause they do feel the cold.
I occasionally treat with ivermectin, a couple of drops behind the ears as they are prone to mites which they tend to pick up from the hay, this helps prevent my pigs from scratching and biting themselves.
Hope this helps
Debs x

I take my pigs to a GP specialist who gave me a fungicidal / antiparasitic shampoo called "Flea or Die". When mine had mites from hay I bathed them weekly for a month, now they are done monthly as a preventative.
