Guinness - Competition Legal?

Does anyone know if Guinness is an illegal feed substance.

If yes, does anyone know the withdrawal period. My 18hh horse is on 1 can a day and it has made a huge difference to him. But I have the regionals in Feb so need to know when to take him off it if necessary.

Its full of iron laura...thats why you're supposed to drink it if you're anaemic at all!!! i was "prescribed" it recently!! and i know our vets put alot of the post op horses on it for a while

i just wondered what it does to the horse? i know beer can put weight on them and make their coats shine-does guinness do the same?

No it isn't mat_b its stout!!!! brewed differently, canned differently, the pint is pulled differently...you should come over here and do the brewery tour!!!!!!!
 
It does help that way to put the iron content is unreal which is why its great for anything thats a bit tired or has a low blood count!! actually i'd say it isn't testable cause we use it as an alternative to collovet which is testable!!
 
yea do come over to dublin and we can do the guinness factory and u can get a free pint at the top while looking at a glorious view of dublin!
im at home at the moment in england but heading back over mid/late jan so if you want a tour guide give me a buzz!

ryanair do great flights for as cheap as £20 return-then we can teach u all about stout-and tasting is a key part of the learning process

but im still interested to know what benefits it makes to tayloredequestrians horse and whether it does anything more than beer
 
wow im reading this an im amazed - my horse is currently on red cell through the winter as has low blood count, is regulaly tested and he is fine but keep him on it just in case - does that mean if i feed him guiness it would have the same effect?

I used to give my pony Guinness, he loooooooooved it! One day the shop was out of all stout so I bought him an extra strong lager instead...........we were jumping the next day and he wouldn't jump a stick! The thought did pass my mind that he may have a hangover...

On the ponders of the Guinness being a banned substance or not, what about cola, I used to give him a can before the jump offs...

My horse is a rather fussy eater, and while he is given 3 feeds a day that are nutrionally balanced to his needs you cannot guarantee that he will eat all or any of his food.

He is quite a worrier and he strikes me as being an anorexic of the horse world!! He will never be fat.

Back in the summer he suffered a fit. Luckily I was on the yard and I saw him collapse to the ground. His eye roll back to expose the white and then his legs started to move as if cantering. 30 seconds later, he was stood up as if nothing was wrong.

All blood tests came back within normal parameters. I also had the vet check him over. Again everything was normal. We decided that we would assume he had been stung into his vein and gone into anaphalatic (not sure of spelling!!) shock.

However he dropped a lot of weight. Someone suggested to me that a lot fo the old fashioned racing trainers used guinness to help their horses.

Having got him on a feed that he eats 90%of the time at the moment I was wary of changing his feed and him dropping more weight. So I decided I would try and add the guinness.

Anyway, he now has a super coat, and he has put on some more weight (although he still looks like an eventer not a dressage horse!!) He also seems happier in himself and is showing some phenomenal movement. If only I could sit to it we'd stand a chance at the regionals!!!!

so what are the bennefits?? weight gain??over-all condition?

How much does Redcell cost? before Christmas there were quite a few deals on alcohol at the supermarket so I got 40 cans for £20. Not a bad deal I thought. I have certainly noticed weight gain as well from it. Not too sure on the actual science behind it though, hence the initial question of whether or not it would be legal, but it has made a difference to him.

Prudence - he has not got at ll fizzy on it. He is a very sensitive horse and I have only noticed good results not bad.

Prudence - you may as well give it a try. whats the worst thing that can happen - you buy some booze, your horse doesn't like it so you give it to your OH and earn some brownie points!!!

But maybe add it slowly to feed, just in case. I started straight off with a whole can but you probablw know how your horse copes with new feed so do what suits her best.
