Does anyone have contact details for Avice Boorman or recommend another gun dog trainer in N Herts.

Lab is fantastically obedient, will retrieve to hand etc, just will not pick up birds - will pick up rabbits, bones, toys, dummies etc.

Can't help with a trainer in your area, but have you tried sewing wings onto the dummy and then covering it in a stocking? If she is happy to retrieve that, then take the stocking off so she is picking the dummy with wings attached and then hopefully you can progress to a dead bird that you keep in the freezer!

I've tries with wings in a sock, she didn't really like it. That was a while ago though and she is much steadier now.

She will be 4 in may and is a bit hyper, a real boingy girl. She was never meant to be a gun dog but son and OH are really enjoying there shooting so she may as well learn a job. However she has calmed down a bit this year so maybe a bit more trainable and steady.

She goes out beating and is allowed to have a go picking up with the 'good' dogs. She is interested in the birds and sniffs round them, also will watch and mark where they fall if she gets a chance. We are lucky as the shooting is with 2 very small and friendly local shoots where they are happy for her to have a go.

Stan, an elderly, well respected gun dog trainer from Brent Pelham, holds weekly training sessions at Nuthampstead, if that's not too far for you!

Can you PM details please.

Thanks

Well, I reckon you could try the wings and dummy trick, seeing as she is a bit older and more used to the smell of birds now.

Have you tried planting a dead bird in cover and sending her to find it?

I hide things in the garden and she looks for them, she is quite good at that, she has a good brain when she remembers to slow down and use it!

She will find the dead bird and then start to pluck the feathers, then will think about eating it unless you tell her NO!

She is quite sensitive so then thinks the NO is 'don't touch the bird'

She constantly carries things around and has a good mouth, it's just getting the brain to work!

hello, we are gundog trainers in nottinghamshire. Is your dog soft mouthed? we have seen this problem alot. Its not always that they dont want to pick it but dont know how to pick it and the feathers are very soft. Have you tried some kind of small waterfowl?

Yes I think she is very soft mouthed, she never seems to damage anything she carries. Although is quite happy to destroy something she is given like a toy if she is told it is hers.
