My daughter is keen to get a dog sometime soon, her husband shoots a lot and would want a working dog (his parents have dogs so he uses those at present) and I think the plan is that I would also be looking after it a bit as well during the week.

I have only had a terrier before, and although she is reasonably good for a terrier, it doesn't matter too much if she tears off after something when we are out walking on our own farm, but I realise that this is a complete no for a gun dog.

Is there a good training book that starts with the small puppy that we should read and digest before getting the puppy?

Ask who his parents use as a trainer, and if you post a vague area on here you may also get recommends.

My OH always rated Joe Irving’s books, but they may be a bit outdated now.

Thanks.

I think that Mrs. probably does the training, for better or worse. I have never been there to see them in action.

There is a local gun dog trainer, I see them when I go riding in that area, but I wanted to know how to start from the very beginning.
I took my terrier to puppy training when she was small and it was definitely worth while, but that person was a long way away and I don't want to go that far now.

Jo Lauren’s Force Free Gundog book is good, I’ll dig out my copy and see what there is for puppies there. I did a gundog puppy class with mine and it was mainly the stuff you’d do in a general puppy class but out in a field and we started some basic retrieve work.

I second 'The Pet Gundog', also do lots of enquiries re local Gundog Trainers. We had a fabulous Gundog Trainer when our boy as a pup and did 1-2-1 sessions as soon as vaccinations permitted which were great fun and very enlightening!

Another recommendation for Lez Graham, Ben Randalls gundog app is supposed to be good, Laura Hill, Advanced retriever training is excellent as a next step.

Most importantly find a good trainer who you click with and like their methods, train 121 and in a class.
