They certainly do for us! The sound carries really well and they’re so versatile which means you can have a whistle command for many more things. Our right, left and back are all on the whistle.

There’s a reason they’re a shepherd’s secret weapon 😊 I think the main reason more people don’t use them is because they’re a total pig to learn to blow initially 😂 it took me a while!
 
Labs usually 211.5 or 212

Spanners 210.5 (designed for closer work) or silent (hate them)

The hpr is going to be on the 211.5 just for my sanity.

Thank you. So do you think Scout maybe can’t hear me when he’s up on the moor or he just pretends? 🤣.
I’m going to get 211.5 I think and retrain him on that. It will have to include the girls as I’ll never put the right one in at the right time if I have two.

I also have a 212 (short fat stubby whistle) which is mega loud as my emergency 'stop' 'get here now' whistle. The 210.5 won't carry very far, spaniels should work much closer than labs (except when they pi55 off and go deaf, then no whistle works)
 
Well I bought a 211.5. It hurts my ears! Have decided to stick with the 210.5. A survey said Scout can ignore either when it suits him.
 
So a query. I am supposed (home work from MJ) to do a max of two retrieves a day. Walk pup on lead to the same spot, place a dummy, heel away sit, wait, send.
We did this for a few days but it bores me to tears and even she has gone from keen to dropping or not even picking.
Today I went more Steve K and hurled the dummy while she was moving and got three lovely returns. When she brings it back we have a play and fuss then I say dead and she lets go. So I’m thinking get her keen again then reintroduce steadiness. She is so quick to learn. Faster than me by a long way.
We’ve nailed place boards. Today we went from one to the other.
 
Freya injured her leg aged 5 months so we couldn't do much for a month, lots of steadieness, delivery etc. She was sweet and compliant but I killed her drive. Needed to do lots and lots on unstructured dummy and ball lobbing to build it again. The steadieness came back as soon as I asked for it, but with a drive to get out there when asked. Different approached suit different temperament dogs.
 
@Clodagh do something differently, and I think that goes for whether the dog is getting it right or wrong. If they’re doing it well don’t flog it to death - we’re all taught with horses to end on a good note, even if that means finishing the lesson early. Likewise if they’re getting it wrong then do something different, so they get an easier task and loads of praise. You’ve trained so many dogs that you know all this - don’t over think it! 😃

I know! But I like going to trainers but then I lose all confidence in what I’ve done. I liked Steve best tbh.
I have to look at my lot sitting up behind the gun line on a 500 bird day and remember I can do this.

Of course you can do it woman! You’re awesome. You’ve just wobbled a bit with Scout being an occasional knob!

Pick your favourite trainer/s and stick with them (I have just about mastered this now) 😉
 
So Rafi and my first trial today!

Lovely first retrieve on a hen pheasant that wasn't running but wasn't dead, took a brill line and picked. Second retrieve was a hare shot at other end of line, great line made the area but wouldn't pick it 🤦🏽‍♀️ he's never picked a hare or rabbit before, dog behind struggled too but picked so we were out, but really pleased with him. I bet you can guess what I brought home with me 🤣

Well done. Hares, unpracticed, are difficult things for all dogs. Especially youngsters.
