Gundog people

Entered Sassy in 3 trials as we had got on top of some minor issues....immediately came in season, one week after her sister. So now my kennel is filled with unrepentant harlots and lovestruck boys singing the song of their people. If I can get a run in once January comes round I will but suitable trials are thin on the ground.

It did give me the opportunity to unleash pointy on the estate (at the very edges, where he could chase things to no ill effect) just see what would happen. Lovely pointing, much flushing and chasing. Drive very much installed. Now back to the boring stuff with his first show this weekend

I’ll never be in a trial, far too incapable, but Scout was absolutely amazing yesterday. Distance handling for two retrieves, with a very difficult send out and return (down a steep sided coombe, full of stream, rocks and brambles, up to the hill top a good 100m away on the other side). He had to hunt the birds up himself once he got there. It’s amazing when it comes together!
I am giving him a nutracalm in the morning and I really think it’s helps him not to lose the plot.

Well done you and scout! Definitely not incapable to trial!

Had a good day out picking up yesterday, Rafi sat steady all day and picked some nice runners. Zazu got some nice picks in the woods and then for the second half of the day went on the beat line with OH, as they were short of dogs. Very proud owner moment that Zazu would work for someone else, but he does love OH.

I should point out OH has only beat 3 times and never worked a gun dog! So a great day all round.

Thinking ahead to next year, I was thinking about residential training courses where I could go with Puppy (who will be 12 months) for a weeks training.
A sort of holiday come school thing.
I know Steve Kimberley does and that’s a maybe but Northumberland is SUCH a long way from deepest Devon.

I'd just worry about the trainer being one that you 'click' with so I'd want to find out lots of info. I see the Mid Wales one pop up a lot, but I know some groups take their own trainers.
On that basis I’ll be off to Northumberland! I can do a stay with HHO’ers on the journey. @TheresaW would have me 😁

Didn't get anywhere in trial today, sat steady during the drive, got sent for a bird that was a blind, at the other end of line in a different field. It was still alive and flapped when he got there, he struggled to get a hold on it quickly and because he didn't pick it up straight away we were out. But he did deliver it perfectly to hand. A shame but a lot struggled today only 2nd place was awarded!

That will come with practice and more game through his mouth. Birds train bird dogs!
