My pony is currently fed Mallemash, thunderbrooks herbal chaff, no more nerves and protexin gut balancer, along with ad lib hay and turnout.

He has loose stools and a gurgling stomach without the balancer. No ulcers etc.

He has mallanders, I'd say fairly mild and we treat with mallanders creams and shampoos. I changed food to the above around 6mths ago to help but the gut balancer contains alfalfa. Are there any alternatives to this - I've looked but like a different language!

I'd be wary of the Thunderbrooks feed.
We had to have some of their haycobs when the shop couldn't get Agrobs recently and my cob, whose skin reacts to sugar, broke out. I checked the ingredients and apparently their sugar content is less than Agrobs but funnily enough since she's been back on Agrobs her skin has cleared up. Also our sheep prefer the Thunderbrooks to Agrobs, which they are because normal grass nuts are too sweet.
But yes, alfalfa can cause problems of varying kinds
