My 20 year old cob has had quite severe diarrhoea the past few days. To the point where I’m concidering phoning a vet, he was on winter grazing but since being loose he’s been stabled with only good quality hay, lots of water with electrolytes in it, tiny amount of senior mix just to get some gut balancer in him. Still no signs of this stopping....my question is about the gut bind paste that’s advertised? Is it any good? He’s wormed upto date so I this is my last resort before I make the call to my vet!

I have used protexin when a foal had loose stools, it worked well for him. Its basically a probiotic. Natural yogurt does the same job apparently, but i was not willing to chance that on a young foal, so it was the vets advice for him.

Used it last week on veterinary advice on an ancient TB, who has intermittent watery squits alongside his droppings. His issues are caused by not being able to chew up/properly digest long fibres, and some gut inflammation. He is on steroids and a largely mash diet now, and seems to be a little bit better.

Thank you, I spoke to my vet this morning and he said give him the weekend to improve if not he’s booked in for 11 on Monday. He’s bright and happy, eating well. I’ve bandaged his tail and giving him soothing warm showers on his bum and back legs to keep it from building up and burning! He’s never been ill the whole 20 years I’ve owned him. He’s home bred so know everything about him. When you go so long with a healthy happy horse then all of the sudden an issue pops up it’s a crash backdown to reality 😫

my old arab (23) started to get very runny a couple of months ago and I think it was due to the new hay which was made in June. Once it started I couldn't seem to stop it by different hay etc. I tried protexin gut balancer before going to the vet. He is now solid but it needs 2 scoops a day. He got solid on 2 and I cut it back to one but needed to get back to 2 scoops to get results. (I also put him on old hay but this didn't resolve it without the protexin)

Just a thought but could good quality hay be your problem. It was for mine. A lot of hay this year was made in June and I wonder if it may be too good quality for some.

Prior to all this he lived out 24/7. Plenty of grass so no need to add hay. The only thing I can see what’s happened is he’s picked something up from a field he went in that has been grazed by beef cattle all summer. Other then that nothing has changed diet wise. Hope I get some answers from my vet on Monday because he’s realys starting to show a weight loss. He’s always been an over weight barrel cob

He always loses weight over winter anyway, I don’t think this has helped though! Lucky for me he’s always been on the large side so he can stand some loss with out it being an issue. I will leave it with my vet tomorrow. His poo has slightly improved but still lose

**update** been to see my equine vet today, horse is fine, checked his poo for worms, all clear. In basic terms his guts are struggling to return to normal after having lose poo. It’s just constantly flushing. He’s got to stay in on very good quality hay, carry on with gut health supplement but double the dose, feed him Alfa hay instead of bran. He said if it doesn’t clear up in 3 weeks he will have to eat a “poo sandwich”. Basically poo from a healthy horse over 3 days to help but goodness back into his guts.

I've followed your thread with interest as my loan cob (aged 18 next year) has had loose bowels for years, with unfortunately no resolve from vet investigations. Sorry but can't help with any info on the gut bind - I'm going to try some Protexin with my boy and recently have tried Thunderbrooks Healthy Herbal Chaff and Keyflow Pink Mash - had a little success in drying him up, but your case is different to mine as its come on recently & he's lost weight, whereas my boy has not. Glad to hear there's a plan of action and wanted to say good luck, I hope he's better soon.

After weeks of trying gut balancers, binders, kaolin the only thing that has worked has just been solid diet of good quality hay and water. That’s it! It seemed the more I was trying to help with gut balancers, Alfa, electrolytes on the vets advice was making him worse!

He’s still sensitive I need to watch everything he’s eating, daughter gave him an apple the other day by mistake and the Diarrhea came back slightly but then settled!

Not at the point yet where I’m confident enough to turn him out on grass incase it starts again but fingers crossed so far he’s formed up! He was due to be drenched at the vets this week but after speaking with my vet I’ve decided against the idea now he’s half settled I don’t want a drastic change in his guts again! Fingers crossed we can see light at the end of the tunnel! No pun intended

Thats good news
Even in humans, a serious tummy bug can take weeks to clear up
I had camphilobacter (spelling suspect) once from bad chicken and I can honestly say I wasn't completely right for about 3 months. TMI I know but I am sure the same could be true for your boy.
