Our 8 yr old Warmblood mare was confirmed in foal about 3 months ago. However periodically, she would display colic signs - mostly just pacing, lying down lots but not rolling or kicking belly, curling her lip up etc. The first few times it happened a vet was called and they were a bit confused as everything was ok after rectal exams etc. Some bute and banamine was prescribed and then she would be fine. No cause was ever found and vets just said possible hormonal pain due to seasons. It happened a couple more times over the months not always coinciding with seasons, sometimes it seemed food related (she is very greedy and doesn’t know when to stop), possibly flush of grass. Never serious just what I would describe as uncomfortable like period pains

Sadly she has now done this twice in the last four weeks whilst being pregnant and I’m convinced she has lost the foal. She hasnt shown any other signs of being in season (she was very reactive to the boys pre pregnancy and at the moment she positively hates them) nor have i seen any evidence she has slipped the foal - no discharge, no evidence of aborted fetus in field (would this even be noticeable?)
I am assuming I need to get a vet to check but Is there any way to check she is in foal still myself other than an internal scan as have heard this in itself can be difficult and risky? Has anyone had similar experiences and finding out well into the pregnancy that no foal? Or had the experience of a slipped foal - what happened/ what was the evidence? Or had a mare who showed similar colicky pain ? It could also still be food related because I have had to let them onto the winter grazing for a a few hours a day over the last week as their summer grazing is all gone and scorched away due to no rain and was having to feed hay. There doesn’t seem to be a clear pattern.

Many thanks in advance for any insights you can give me!

Scanning mares is routine, nothing to be worried about- when was she last scanned?
If she has a history of mild colics I wouldn’t be too worried about her having slipped the pregnancy

Thank you for replying. She was scanned at 40 days and all fine but vet said ‘no need to scan again - see you in 9 1/3 months time’, which surprised me! I hate not knowing and had also read that it becomes more difficult to scan later on because the way the foal lies

My mare absorbed the foal after the early stages, no reasoning , no idea why, it just happened ?
Can they just reabsorb ? Looking at how big the foetus would be ie the size of a chinchilla, that sounds like it would be too big to reabsorb? Do mares come back into season if they slip or reabsorb or is that it for the year if they have gone a certain amount of weeks in the pregnancy?
