Gutted......and lots of broken bones

Ha ha Star you on correct......I am certainly saving money as I am not needing to purchase much loo paper!!! Gunna try some prunes tomorrow, coz not been since last Friday!

I guess I have had a good amount of drugs on top of the general - I was under for 3 hours on Saturday night so guess I would have had a lot of anaesthetic.

So much for a girl to look forward to!! Struggling to control my excitement.

ouch ! you poor thing, sounds horrific glad you seem in good spirits. box sets of missed tv and loads of books required! Hope you heal quickly

On a seperate note - I always seem to land on my arse or my head ! no training was necessary to do this ! I think the size of my arse means its the heaviest part and hence lands first haha !

jeeeez. huge sympathy to you, what a nightmare.
i blew my knee apart landing on my feet, so I know what it's like. you have a split second of 'oh cool, i'm upright' followed by 'OH ****'...
i hope the painkillers continue to keep you nice and floaty. watch those co-codamol, they had a terrible effect on me, i passed clean out while on my crutches, twice. funny now but not at the time...
big vibes to you for a speedy recovery.

Fidgety I did the same as you - spiral fracture with IM Nail through tib. Sounds like I was lucky tho as did it in same manner as OP, horse stopped, I didn't, landed on feet.
I probably shouldn't admit it but I got back on after 4 weeks :/ as with the IM nail they don't put you in plaster. I played it safe and only hacked for about 3 months then didn't jump again for a year (until they removed the nail).

Blimey Ecrozier, <respect>, I wasn't even bending my knee properly at 4 weeks and without plaster my leg felt very vulnerable so I was a big wuss. Like you though, no jumpy jumpies for me until I can get the nail out (hopefully next Feb). T'was fun though when I went through the scanner last week at the airport :D

What an awful sounding accident although you seem to be looking on the bright side already. Healing vibes to you - I hope you find something to occupy the time! :)

Oh yes the co-codamel (or indeed anything codine based) did not agree with me either, I felt hideous on them.
Fidgety, I'm not sure I was wise to do it- I hopped to the mounting block on my crutches, got on a went for a hack! On the horse I fell off in the first place but he to me is the safest horse I have ever ridden, had him about 9 years and never fallen off on the flat/hacking, only ever parted company over a fence. The worst think was tho the day before I broke my leg, we bought a rising 3 year old!! He is almost 6 now but my OH had to do the first year's worth of work with him as I couldn't risk being chucked off!!
I protected that leg a lot for a long time, worst thing was dismounting, also with the big youngster when he occasionally brushes your leg against the fence, that was very scary. It's totally fine now though on that score. I still curl it up though and raise my heel when concentrating on other things so do have to watch that.
Actually, no, the worst thing was that I did it at the area ODE qualifier, in the SJ..... And I was leading the dressage with a 26.5, and he had jumped clear round almost the same XC track 3 weeks before!!! We were in with a real chance til I fell

Oh sheez, as a teenager I broke my ankle in the growing plate, thought not as bad as yours and a clean break. Still needed pinning and they advised it would be 12 weeks before physio and 16 before riding. I was riding at 8 weeks in a cast (young and foolish not to be advised). I really feel for you it was the start of my summer season too.

Vibes to heal quickly :)

Yikes - sounds awful :( Hope you heal quickly!

Fingers and toes aside, I've never actually broken anything....pure fluke since I'm the most uncoordinated ganglebottom ever :o

Co codamol completey wiped me out to...i came off it after 5/6 days as it just made me sick. I watched an awful lot of the olympics that summer, and wimbledon etc Also watched a lot of project free tv and caught up with all the american dramas to help with the boredom!

My horse got used to my crutches quite quickly though and i used to groom her still while hoping around on one crutch (will say someone was always near by though so didn't do it alone) i think this helped to keep me sane!

Really hope you feel better soon, and i agree with everyone else push things as much as you can during physio you will be glad of it when you are back on your feet again.

Ugh, poor you. :( I feel a bit ill just hearing about it. Don't laugh, but one friend of mine took up knitting when she was laid up, making stuffed toys, hats etc for a children's ward. I'm not that good a person - I've traditionally watched tv and played on the internet!

Hope you make a speedy recovery but do your best to follow orders - ankles are tricky and I can tell you from experience you want it to heal as well as possible.

Can't speak to pain killers, I come from the land of Demerol and hence dread doing myself any serious harm here!

I picked up a serious judge Judy and Jeremy Kyle habit when I was laid up . I am off the Jeremy Kyle now but will admit to a little judge Judy habit .
Every day is day nearer being back on board just slog though it .
I had not discovered the forum back then it would have been great for filling in time.
Healing vibes from here.

I really feel for you. I managed to break my foot last June and was out of action only two months since thankfully it was a good break to have and moon boots are wonderful. Hope you get them rather than a traditional cast. My horse was initially terrified of my crutches but soon got over it!

My OH knackered his knee falling off at speed at landing on his feet. Tibial plateau fracture and wrecked his anterior cruicate ligament. He was a week in hospital then a good year before he was back riding even with good physio three times a week. His knee still occasionally bothers him now.

Try not to be to impatient and push things too early. Listen to your body and allow yourself to heal but get yourself a good physio. Ankles and elbows are difficult joints due to the range of movement in them.

Take the opportunity to watch some DVDs or play an addictive computer game or spend lots of time on HHO! ;)

Eeew! That sounded awful. Hope you feel better soon. Don't rush things though - let it heal and do the physio...

I was laid up following a shoulder op last summer and thats how I got addicted to this forum! Once I got used to not riding it was nice visiting big shows and events and not worrying that I was missing competitions..

I really badly sprained my foot after coming off on a hack and had three weeks in a cast. It was over Christmas and got really upset so I feel your pain. Try to follow doctors advice, I tried to do everything too quickly and it went very wrong

Unfortunately I don't have any useful advice, never having broken a bone in my life (as I'm grabbing wood all around) but can offer a bit of sympathy. Just came off my horse on Monday in a rather spectacular flying starfish dismount following a rather uncharateristic buck. I landed on my feet and felt pain in my left ankle. Fortunately for me the school was rolled really tight and gave a firm but cushioned landing so my ankle didn't roll, so no sprain -- just jarred it really hard.

If I could feel that much pain on something that I'm walking days later, I can only imagine what you are going thru with all that breakage. Hope you mend soon!

Arrr the curse of landing on your feet , I know a couple of others who have done the same and broke bones, it's easier said than done but where possible best to try and avoid hitting the ground feet first, feel very sorry for you, nothing worse than being stuck in a hospital bed :-(, wish u a speedy recovery x

I did exactly the same thing 4 years ago afraid it was 5 months before I started riding again. Now it doesn't give me any pain but have lost some flexion in the joint meaning I often ride at uneven stirrup lengths to compensate.

My best advice is as soon as plaster off get some good private physio worth its weight in gold.

MH and I haveboth broken our right ankle in a similar way to yours but had varying treatment. Mine was pinned and plated straight away, put in a cast for 7 weeks and then I was wright bearing straight away and riding (although leg very weak). Had physio and exercisesto dowhilst in plaster but tbh nothing helped other than getting out of plaster and using leg normally. Nothing prepared me for the weakness and time it took to have no pain or swelling ( still swells now 8 years later).

MH wasn't operated on for a few days and didn't have a cast. Think it took her longer to recover. She still has her metal work in leg, I had mine removed after 6 months.

Hope all goes well for you. Drop me a message if you want to chat/commiserate/need motivation!

FMC x

Ouch :( so sorry to hear of your accident.

Last year I fell off my boy at the riding club champs, and while the doc was examining me I could see him looking worried in the distance. Very nice strangers looked after him for me and he was fine thankfully like your horse. I was pleased to be the one nursing a broken thumb, rib, black eye, black knee and my horse had nothing - its the way I would want it to be.

No advice for your injury sorry, just sending healing vibes (((()))) your way and hope you are on again in no time.

So sorry for you lots of healing vibes for you too. I remb being taught to tuck and roll when you came off in the pony club, when i come off i land like Star says my arse too, bit more padding there. Horrible when you break something, i broke my foot when a horse stood on it when i was a teenager, never realised it at the time and didnt go to the hosp hence i cant now wear heels as cant bend the joint so well hey ho good job im 5'9" then.

Hi guys. Thanks for the messages. Am trying to stay positive but feeling dreadful today, pain killers don't seem to be helping, am feeling sick, very light headed and generally a bit out of sorts. Guess I will have good days and bad days. I just want to have a good cry but cant - maybe the situation hasn't sunk in yet. Suppose it will take time.

Take care.

Oh poor you. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Careful with the cocodamol - they made me dizzy and constipated !!

I think 40 mins for an ambulance is utter madness - did you pay for first aid cover? I was under the impression that for insurance purposes any event where jumping takes place must have on site paramedic cover? Might be worth investigating when you're bored.

Get off the co-codamol, seriously. they made me feel as if i was dying. sick and lightheaded, all over the place, hot and cold, passing out, doolally... yeuk. some people are fine on them, but if they don't agree with you they make you feel TERRIBLE. you can layer Ibuprofen and Paracetamol, did the nurse tell you how?
I think (but please please check with a nurse or doc) that it's fine to take, say, 2 Ibu, then 2 Para 2 hours (or more if you can) later, then 2 Ibu 2 hours (or more if you can) later. no more than recommended dose of either, within 24 hour period, but you can layer 1 on top of the other because they have different active ingredients, and this way you are never without pain relief and waiting to be allowed the next dose... check it out though, i don't want to be responsible if the advice i was given is wrong!

This will pass. distract yourself from how it feels and how you feel, with a load of crappy movies or something.
big gentle hugs and big sympathy to you. the body's an amazing thing and it WILL come right. xxx

Ouch, I know exactly how you feel, didn't do ankle but did do leg!

I was having a jumping lesson, came over the 1st part of double, didnt keep leg on for 2nd part and horse said NO! Came sliding off the shoulder the most boring fall ever!!

I had 1 metal plate and 4 screws put into mine was initially told be on crutches and not on a horse for 2yrs but 20months later off them and have now riding for just over a yr again, big confidence knock though!!

Hope you feel better, it's very dull being broken and unable to ride!!

In January (in an un horse related accident, but landed in the same way and felt things crunch) I snapped about 2 inches clean off the end of my tibia. I came home to the uk to have it operated on and screwed back together. I was told it would be 6-9months before I would even be able to think about sitting on a horse. Having just recently found my ultimate horse and finishing last season on a real high I was absolutely gutted.

I was put onto tramadol which made me very sick, depressed and completely away with the fairies. Coming off these drugs made things much better. I dosed myself up with arnica and paracetamol. I promise things get better, my only advice at this point is don't sit around feeling sorry, I did this and it only made things worse. Try and to get out and about and doing things. I went back to work 2 weeks after my op which was surprisingly good!

When my cast came off no one warned me that I would not be able to move my ankle at all, which came as a massive shock and really set me back again. ( I naively thought I'd be able to walk around straight away) you can't!

BUT....... 3 1/2 months after I did it, 3 weeks after I came off crutches, I rode round the novice at south of England last weekend and had a great time, I'm off to Jardy a week Tuesday to ride in the 1*. You are the only thing that can help yourself. Rest while you need to, and crack on when you can. The more work you do the better it will be. My physio is horsey so understands my aims and really helps but every time I see her she's shocked how much I've done myself.

I really hope your feeling ok, don't get down about what the doctors say, it will definitely get better, be prepared for things to seem worse before they get better and if your determined you'll be back in no time!! :) chin up at the moment, I know how you feel, stay positive. My fingers are crossed for you.
