Some of you may be aware that my mare had a big kissing spine operation ( 4 pieces of bone removed ) at the beginning of september last year. She went through all the rehab and I started to lunge and then ride her again in January of this year.

All was going well untill a couple of weeks ago when she showed lameness on a circle in the manege. At first I thought she may have tweaked a muscle or something as she can be a handfull on the lunge if she's feeling good. So I made an appointment with the physio to check her over. All working fine in that area!

So last week had vet out who did a lameness workup and she blocked sound in the coffin joint. Today she had x rays which didn't reveal anything significant which means that there is possible some soft tissue damage. :-(

The good thing is she is only about 1/10ths lame and my brilliant farrier has put bar shoes on her today. He saw her xrays and he and vet agreed this was the best course of action for now. ( vet highly praised my farrier for his excellent shoeing and managing her upright boxy feet so well) She is allowed to stay out in the field as she lives out 24/7 during the summer and to bring her in now would stress her out. She is more sensible in the field. She will have 2 months rest and will then be reassessed at the end of july.

To say I am disappointed is an understatement, but as my title says, that's horses for you.

Hope everything turns out well once the rest period is over, it will pass quickly so just enjoy pampering her in the meantime. :)

That's awful for you. Please make sure to give the coffin joint plenty of time to heal. All cases are different but my horse never came right and I often wonder if he should have had more time off - he was rested for over 4 months and went lame again but maybe his was more severe. Fingers Crossed for you.
