I had to sell him in February 2008 for financial reasons, even though he was a fantastic schoolmaster who I had loads of fun on. When I got made redundant last year I rang the owners just on the chance that they might not be getting on with him, and asked if I could buy him back (this was about July/August time). I was told no way, that he was with them for ever, and that they loved him to bits.

I have just googled his name and have found that he has been eventing all season with someone else

Granted this doesnt mean he HAS been sold, but it seems likely

Pointless post because I know perfectly well that I relinquished all claim to the horse when I sold him etc etc, but I begged them to sell him back to me and they wouldnt

If it were me I'd get in touch with that person whose been eventing him. If he HAS been sold on then it wouldn't hurt to let them know that you would be interested in buying him back?

I had a similar experience when we sold a horse only to see him advertised just a few weeks later. Luckily the new owner is in contact with us now. It is very upsetting when something like that happens but worth while trying to track down the new owner. I hope it all works out for you.

I have no idea why people do like that but it happens, maybe something changed after you had contacted them. Contact the rider if you can, if they've bought him, just let them now that you're interested in his future. Although I presume since you now have Bob, you're not in the position where you could just buy Josh back tomorrow, we never know what will happen in the future and it doesn't hurt if they know how to contact you.

Thanks guys, might try and contact the new rider

You are right FL, I am not in a position to have two horses, and the reason I googled Josh today was because I am wondering whether I did the right thing buying Bob after ANOTHER crap show-jumping session today. Not because Bob isnt a fab horse, he certainly is and I love riding him, but because I am such a bloody useless rider that unless I have two lessons EVERY week (which I really cant afford to do) then it doesnt go right... with a schoolmaster like Josh then it is easier than with a mentally slightly greener horse like Bob. Josh was/is a point and shoot machine, whereas Bob actually needs riding to a fence

Years ago a friend of mine bought a horse. About a year later, some strangers turned up on the yard looking for him. They'd heard that he was there through the grapevine. They'd outgrown him and wanted to loan him out, but got persuaded to sell him on the condition that they got first refusal if he was for sale again. The new owner didn't even contact them and instead sold him to my friend.

It was a happy ending though, as my friend was only too happy to know that there was a lovely home awaiting him when she outgrew him, and he went back there a few years later.
