Had mare vetted today, lady had put her deposit down and was to collect her Sunday if all went well.

Vet found sarcoid near the girth area small bit bigger than a pea, always been there, never changed in the year and a bit I have had her. Didn't really think anything of it, just thought it was a wart, it's covered in hair, doesn't affect her whatsoever. Silly really, should have had it checked out.

Lady who was buying has decided not to have her due to it (understandably).
I really don't know what to do now, I obviously have to state that she has it. What do I write though, surely it will put people off instantly?

I have no idea about how they affect value of the horse, whether or not to have it treated, just what to do in general. Am going to speak to my vet about it tomorrow. Just totally deflated, bleurgh.

I'll take anything, advice, sympathy whatever you want!
New York style chicken and chips for all.

If it's small and not bothering the mare there is an excellent chance you could treat it, but DONT just put anything on it, send pictures to Liverpool and get them to tell your vet what to do with it. Treating them can make them suddenly worse, so it needs to be done right. Liverpool University have an excellent page on sarcoid info.
Some people don't mind sarcoids, did she pass the rest of the vetting or was it called off?

Passed the rest of the vetting, I have read the Liverpool page, really good info.
How do I go about sending a picture, what info do I need to give etc etc?
Thanks Susie T.

I'm not sure what info you need to get, is there an email on there? If not speak to your vet, I just know that's the best way A fellow called Knottenbelt is the expert on sarcoids so if you can find his email..?
actually, just found this info: Contact us

Not sure if you would need to go through your own vets first but just be very very wary of them 'trying' things as is can go so wrong.

Professor Derek Knottenbelt is a world expert on (amongst other things) sarcoids in horses but it's my understanding he has now retired from Liverpool Uni. You will need to go through your own vet to get information and (possibly) the right strength Liverpool Cream to treat your horse's sarcoid. Sarcoids are a form of skin cancer but many don't change for years and years, if at all. But some can be quite nasty, even if they haven't changed for years. With inactive sarcoids that are in a "harmless" place on a horse, it's usually best to leave them alone. Don't be tempted to put anything on them that states things like "encourages skin growth" as that can kick start a sarcoid. Tea tree and aloe vera products are a definite no-no. Some owners have had success with thuja cream but beware because some lumps that look like sarcoids aren't - they are just warty lumps and they can clear up of their own accord. But true sarcoids in a position on the horse that could cause problems (eg girth area, saddle area, etc) if they flared up can be a problem and can indeed cause potential buyers to change their minds. I fear you are in a no-win situation because if you decide to have the sarcoid on your horse treated 1) you would still have to declare it and 2) treatment might cause it to become active and dangerous. You might just have to drop the price to reflect the sarcoid and it's awkward position and hope someone is prepared to take a chance.
