My fantastic cob Ellie was PTS last night. She was 13 yrs old..it seems her liver gave out..not sure why yet as she was being treated for a possible virus/pneumonia..Up until yesterday she looked so well despite having not eaten for days and having breathing problems. She was so well behaved for the vets and even when she went blind due to the toxins she followed me across the yard and into the trailer to take her to hospital, travelled like a pro and followed me back down the ramp and into her hospital bed.

She was a real family cob..anyones ride. 2008 was going to be her year. I've been having dressage lessons and was looking forward to putting them into practice and my 11 yr old daughter was going to start riding her too this year. It wasn't meant to be...

Gutted really is an understatement

This is Big Els (Ellie).. as wide as she was tall (15.2hh)..a really gentle, honest, sweet horse

Oh no! I'm so very sorry - I'd been following your posts and had no idea she was so poorly. RIP Ellie and big (((hugs))) to you and your daughter at this terrible time. A huge loss for you and I wish you strength over the coming days.

I'm so sorry to hear this. You poor thing.

Any chance that someone had dumped something in the field? Blindness is a classic symptom of Lead poisoning, although I'm sure it can be a symptom of other things. We lost a couple of cows to lead poisoning last year before we realised that someone had dumped some very old roofing felt in the field. It didn't contain high quantities of lead, but enough to kill two and leave one desperately ill and blind. With intensive treatment, she made a full recovery, but it took the death of the other two to help us diagnose the third.

Huge hugs to all of you. A dreadful shame x x
