Was supposed to be off to a dressage clinic tomorrow with my new mare. Our first trip out since buying her in September!!
Thought i had better do some practice loading today as haven't boxed her since I picked her up and it took me 3 hours to load her!!!
I have now cancelled the clinic and booked a session from our local loading guru for next weekend.
I am sooooooooooo gutted as was really looking forward to it

Oh no!!! I saw the title and was really panicking that it must be about your new girl, but (in the nicest way possible) I'm relieved that it's behaviour problems, rather than health. I used to have a bad loader, so I know how frustrating it is. xx

Aw Puppy sorry to worry you but yes just a moody mare problem!!! In all other respects my new little marey is a superstar

I just LOVE her!!
I hate with a passion bad loaders so plan on nipping it in the bud ASAP.

Seahorse - have been recommended someone local who says she will have her loading in an hour!!!! Had a chat to her today and she seems lovely and very confident that she can sort her.

I was a bit silly really as she wasn't easy to load when I picked her up, its just she's been so perfect in every other way i thought she'd be ok

Just glad to hear it is something you can sure with a behaviourist, and not a vet

Great that she is proving such a star in all other respects

At least you tried today and found out rather than tomorrow morning. Great you have someone to help you and hope you start going out and about soon xx

True very true!! In fact its not really her being naughty she really doesn't understand what to do!! Hows your weekend away?

I feel your disappointment

Missy moo hasn't been in the box for nearly a year, so may be telling the same story next week too

Just a thought... is your mare food orientated? To get my yearling going in the trailer hassle free, I fed him daily in it for weeks before venturing out... typical male thinking about his stomach! If it's your own trailer it may be worth trying - time consuming but worth it! xx

I have a bateson with barn doors and on his good days he pops himself in without me leading him through the trailer lol! I tried to make it a happy place and played about in it for hours going back and forth through the trailer all different way s lol! Must admit, I had it quite easy, he's a laid back gelding! Didn't take much more then food, reassurance and praise! xx

The chesnut filly in the last picture was not so willing! We had no chance of getting her in there and didn't want to force her and make it a massive ordeal for her as a baby!

When we have had bad loaders at the yard, we park the trailer up tight to a solid wall which is alongside the side we are trying to load in. Just helps the running out process a little more only having to concentrate on the other side!

A few of my friends horses (funnily enough all mares) have obections at travelling in a trailer and point blank refuse to load - but will load in lorries without issue. Perhaps if the issue continues ask to borrow someone's lorry to try her in. If she happily loads in that it may be worth getting one if money isn't an issue! I wanted a lorry, could afford to buy one, but wouldn't be able to afford to run it alongside a car! So stuck to a trailer! Good luck for next week! xx
