Gutted

Had an injury with one of ours a couple of years ago that meant he was bandaged right up to his shoulder on his near side. He also did not 'DO' box rest so we did fence him a little paddock and he was as good as gold.... Recovered quickly and reduced swelling as he could move about and was not stressing about being in....

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that! At least you'd been having a great time up until then though.

Infections can happen on box rest too, so if it's viable then I'd definitely get a 12x12 stood up. A happier horse may well heal quicker too than a stressed out, unhappy one in a confined space with little company. It often works for people!

omg hoping it heals well. i would also do a 12 x 12 turnout in the field .presumably leg will be dressed to keep clean . i think most horses dont do box rest alone from their friends and you dont need extra stress..

Thank you everyone :)

She was a feeling a bit better about it all today and even got a little turnout as shes getting abandage change tomorrow then we will assess her management.

I made a little paddock but want the bandage change done before I put her out :)

Well Eowyn got out (minus Kia he was in the other field) for a wee bitty whilst I mucked them out and topped her bed up, it is very nearly up to my knees in straw lol :)

I am having to jag her with horsey penecillin twice a day....

Your horse appears very relaxed and contented after such a horrible injury. I hope it heals quickly. if possible I would also be inclined to make a small paddock for him, perhaps just bringing him for a short spell in the day to avoid flies/let him lie down in a comfy bed?

She looks so patient gentle & trusting, bless her. Nice for her the suns shining, fingers crossed it stays this way and she heals quickly. It's a good thing horses are so nice to be around, even if not being ridden - if it seems there's a one in a million opportunity for an accident, they can be relied on to find it :(

Thank you everyone, she is being very patient about it all and the fact that she has her boyfriend and I am trying to avoid her triggers I think may help the healing process.

After this bandage change today she will be going in the field in a 12x12 space which i may or may not put a bale of straw down on to cushion her not decided yet :)

Ouch, glad she is being a good patient. Sending mega vibes for speedy and uncomplicated healing.

Poor horse! Get well soon!

One of my worst fears out hacking - unless you know the ground really well you never know what your horse might end up with its feat in :-(

Still, makes my old Arab's fear of standing on drain covers seem much more rational...

Ouchies!! :(:(

If its any consolation, my last horse horse had an injury very similar to your girls and it healed very well with almost no scarring. Just a little bald stripe

The less they move the better as the wound won't get too disturbed and the new skin has a better chance to bind. I also used magnetic boots when the bandage came off and that seemed to keep the swelling right down and speed up the healing process - even the vet was impressed!

Good luck and keep us posted x
